Anaesthetics Of Existence

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

“Experience” is a thoroughly political category, a social and historical product not authored by any individual. At the same time, “the personal is political,” and one's own lived experience is an important epistemic resource. In Anaesthetics of Existence Cressida J. Heyes reconciles these two positions, drawing on examples of things that happen to us but are nonetheless excluded from experience. If for Foucault an “aesthetics of existence” was a project of making one's life a work of art, Heyes's “anaesthetics of existence” describes antiprojects that are tacitly excluded from life—but should be brought back in. Drawing on critical phenomenology, genealogy, and feminist theory, Heyes shows how and why experience has edges, and she analyzes phenomena that press against those edges. Essays on sexual violence against unconscious victims, the temporality of drug use, and childbirth as a limit-experience build a politics of experience while showcasing Heyes's much-needed new philosophical method.

Foucault S Aesthetics Of Existence And Shusterman S Somaesthetics

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Bringing together Michel Foucault's aesthetics of existence and Richard Shusterman's somaesthetics, this volume provides a critical comparison of two of the most influential philosophical theories of the late 20th and early 21st centuries. Introduced by a comprehensive overview of both concepts by editors Stefano Marino and Valentina Antoniol, the ensuing chapters interrogate the affinities and variances between Foucault's and Shusterman's philosophies. Building on the interdisciplinary character of somaesthetics and aesthetics of existence, international scholars explore these ideas through a wide range of topics ranging from care of the self and of the social self to the ethical and political challenges posed by themes as white ignorance, construction of resistances, and production of subjectivities. Given the central role played by the body in both concepts, this volume also affords particular attention to the philosophy of sexuality. Demonstrating the value of reading these two thinkers together through the adoption of radical interpretive perspectives, Foucault's Aesthetics of Existence and Shusterman's Somaesthetics highlights the potentialities and the relevance of Foucault's and Shusterman's theories, even with respect to our actualité.

Philosophical Sojourns In Aesthetics Existence And Education

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This collection of seven speculative and critical essays initiates a journey, inviting readers to abide, for a short time, with philosophical themes emerging from aesthetics, poetry, existentialism, and education. It opens vistas into the insightful wisdom of Nietzsche, Heidegger, Jaspers, Rilke, and Plato’s Socrates. The book confronts such perennial issues as the practice of philosophy as a way of life, the understanding of subjecthood and human transcendence, the pursuit of ethical knowledge in ways that inform and direct the choices we make in the company of others, and the philosophical quest for unique ways of learning that transcend contemporary practices embracing standardization and adopting an instrumental approach to education. This book is novel in that it offers these insights across broad, but related, fields of study, for, although essentially a philosophy text, it provides scholarly inroads to the academic fields of literary critique, classical studies, psychology, and educational theory. The text could be effectively employed as a secondary avenue of study in institutions of higher learning, supplementing primary philosophical sources in the curriculum. In addition to programs offering advanced degrees, the book also serves as a challenging introductory text for students at the undergraduate level demonstrating an interest in, and proclivity for, philosophy.

Marxist Aesthetics

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Originally published in 1984, this study deals with a number of influential figures in the European tradition of Marxist theories of aesthetics, ranging from Lukacs to Benjamin, through the Frankfurt School, to Brecht and the Althusserians. Pauline Johnson shows that, despite the great diversity in these theories about art, they all formulate a common problem, and she argues that an adequate response to this problem must be based on account of the practical foundations within the recipient's own experience for a changed consciousness.
