The book describes current research into all aspects of craftwork in ancient Egypt.

The first Science for Ancient Egyptian Materials and Technologies conference was held under the auspices of His Excellency Pr. Khaled el-Enany at the Manial Palace Museum in Cairo, from 4 to 6 November 2017. Its aim was to provide a venue at which specialists in the application of physical and chemical sciences to archaeology could meet, present their research and exchange ideas. Above all, it was intended to highlight the importance of archaeological sciences and interdisciplinary approaches within Egyptology. This volume brings together papers on high-level studies relevant to all fields of archaeometry, carried out both on museum objects and at excavation sites. It provides a general overview of the impressive possibilities that this science offers to various fields, and opens the way for a radical improvement of its application in archaeological research in Egypt.

Science in the Study of Ancient Egypt takes an innovative and integrated approach to the use of scientific techniques and methodologies within the study of ancient Egypt. Accessibly demonstrating how to integrate scientific methodologies into Egyptology broadly, and in Egyptian archaeology in particular, this volume will help to maximise the amount of information that can be obtained within a study of ancient Egypt, be it in the field, museum, or laboratory. This Handbook explores the history of mathematics under a series of themes which raise new questions about what mathematics has been and what it has meant to practise it. It addresses questions of who creates mathematics, who uses it, and how. A broader understanding of mathematical practitioners naturally leads to a new appreciation of what counts as a historical source. The royal necropolis of New Kingdom Egypt, known as the Valley of the Kings (KV), is one of the most important--and celebrated--archaeological sites in the world. Located on the west bank of the Nile river, about three miles west of modern Luxor, the valley is home to more than sixty tombs, all dating to the second millennium BCE. The most famous of these is the tomb of Tutankhamun, first discovered by Howard Carter in 1922. Other famous pharaoh's interred here include Hatshepsut, the only queen found in the valley, and Ramesses II, ancient Egypt's greatest ruler. Much has transpired in the study and exploration of the Valley of the Kings over the last few years. The travel accounts of Frédéric Cailliaud were an important early contribution to the birth of Egyptology in the first half of the nineteenth century. But one of his major works was never published. For the first time here, his exquisite color plates are presented alongside a translation of his original French text. Arriving in Egypt in 1815, Cailliaud made copious notes on the flora and fauna, people and antiquities, and took a collection of over two thousand objects back to France. His beautifully rendered watercolors of scenes on ancient Egyptian tombs and temples show animated scenes of ancient daily life.
