Angels In The Trenches

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

After a miraculous escape from the German military juggernaut in the small Belgian town of Mons in 1914, the first major battle that the British Expeditionary Force would face in the First World War, the British really believed that they were on the side of the angels. Indeed, after 1916, the number of spiritualist societies in the United Kingdom almost doubled, from 158 to 309. As Arthur Conan Doyle explained, 'The deaths occurring in almost every family in the land brought a sudden and concentrated interest in the life after death. People not only asked the question, "If a man die, shall he live again?" but they eagerly sought to know if communication was possible with the dear ones they had lost.' From the Angel of Mons to the popular boom in spiritualism as the horrors of industrialised warfare reaped their terrible harvest, the paranormal - and its use in propaganda - was one of the key aspects of the First World War. Angels in the Trenches takes us from defining moments, such as the Angel of Mons on the Front Line, to spirit communication on the Home Front, often involving the great and the good of the period, such as aristocrat Dame Edith Lyttelton, founder of the War Refugees Committee, and the physicist Sir Oliver Lodge, Principal of Birmingham University. We see here people at every level of society struggling to come to terms with the ferocity and terror of the war, and their own losses: soldiers looking for miracles on the battlefield; parents searching for lost sons in the séance room. It is a human story of people forced to look beyond the apparent certainties of the everyday - and this book follows them on that journey.

The Strange Case Of The Angels Of Mons

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

World War I began disastrously for the English when the Germans routed them at Mons, Belgium, on August 23 and 24, 1914. On September 29, 1914, the Anglo-Welsh writer Arthur Machen fictionalized this encounter in a newspaper story, claiming that the English were saved by the appearance of angelic bowmen sent by St. George. But his fiction became accepted as fact. The believers--notables G. K. Chesterton, Arthur Conan Doyle and C. S. Lewis, along with almost forgotten figures like Harold Begbie, Phyllis Campbell and T. W. H. Crosland--wrote pamphlets, testimonies and poems, performed music and created motion pictures attesting to the existence of the guardian angels. This history of the Angels of Mons controversy for the first time collects and annotates Machen's work and the responses it inspired, most of which have not been available since their publication a century ago. Also reprinted for the first time are several of Machen's responses to the believers, including "The Angels of Mons: Absolutely My Last Word on the Subject" and "The Return of the Angels: This Time They Are at Ypres."

The Balkan S Angels I

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

The blood-soaked Balkan Wars have come to an end after years of violence, hatred, and extreme genocide. For a soldier named Tom, however, the battle has just begun. He is recruited in secret to hunt war criminals-some of whom are still in power. Europe cannot handle another period of embattlement; national forces will stop at nothing to keep the well-earned peace. This is where Tom comes in. He is recruited by an old friend to track and hunt the worst of the worst and bring them to justice before an international court. He heads into war-ravaged Bosnia, and, although his intentions are good, it isn't always easy finding the bad guy. Political unrest is still prevalent, and it seems as though no one is willing to help this ambitious soldier on a mission to do right. Worse, there could be a leak in their own department. Tom suspects there's a mole, so it's his team's first duty to destroy the villain. Then, they can go after the head honcho-the president of Serbia. Nothing is clear on the battlefront; friends be-come enemies, and enemies become friends. Tom must travel the whole of Europe to find his target, but he will stop at nothing to bring justice to an unjust world.

The Angels Book Of Promises

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

The Angels Book of Promises is an easy to follow handbook for all those aspiring to establish a relationship with angels. It contains chapters on Angel Meditations, Scrying techniques, Rituals and Hand movements, and approaches the subject in a completely different way. Working on the premise that one good turn deserves another, the Angels Book of Promises is an extremely effective bargaining tool. On one page, the aspirant writes exactly what he or she wants from their guiding angels, and on the opposite page what they are willing to do in return. Once the book has been ritualistically programmed, it should then be wrapped in black silk or velvet and not seen or touched by anyone else but the user. The instructions are clear and easy to follow. The book also contains anecdotal accounts of angels by other people and includes detailed information of how angels infiltrate our lives without us even knowing. It also looks at the Angel of the Thames, witnessed by thousands of people since the seventeenth century and continues to appear to tourists today. ,

Angels In Iron

BOOK EXCERPT:

The year is A.D. 1565 and the tiny island fortress of Malta, defended by an anachronistic crusading order called the Knights of St. John Hospitallers, is all that stands between the war machine of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent and the very heart of Christendom. Pitifully outmatched and against impossible odds, the indomitable Grand Master Jean Parisot de La Valette nevertheless inspires his knights to "strike a blow for Christ" and sacrifice their lives to halt the invading Turks at the gates of Europe. Nicholas Prata relates the actual events of the Great Siege in riveting and graphic prose which brings the extreme heroism of the knights and the horror of combat sharply into focus.

Angels Of The Blockade The Story Of Marina Sergeyevna Karetnikova

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

God was not absent or silent during the "900-Day Siege" or Blockade of Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg, Russia). The compelling story of little Marina Sergeyevna and her parents demonstrates the significant role that one family of Christians played in surviving the Blockade, and how Russian Christians helped other people survive it with dignity and with faith in God. They did so at great political and personal risk to themselves. This story could not have been told during the militantly atheist, soviet era, but it has an important message to convey to post-soviet Russians, who believe that chance or their own strength saved them from fascism. God did not abandon Russia. Faith in God was the secret of strength in weakness. Ideal for classrooms and home-schooling environments, Angels of the Blockade includes project ideas to accompany any unit on World War II on age appropriate levels from about 4th grade and up.
