The first years of the 21st century have seen an unparalleled progress in biomedical sciences. Several dogmata that haunted scientific debate for decades were easily abandoned, and there is a fundamental shift away from eminence-based toward evidence-based assessment of preclinical models, probing their true value in predicting clinical outcomes of human diseases. Likewise, several new approaches, e.g., stem cell-based, diseases-in-a-dish and organs-on-a-chip and lab-on-a-chip technologies have revitalized the domain of alternatives to animal experimentation. It is now more than half a century since animal cells first came into regular use in the laboratory. Instances of laboratory acquired infection and con tamination of therapeutic products, derived from the use of animal cell cultures are rare. The use of animal cells, in addition to an established role in the production of vaccines and therapeutic proteins, has many new medical applications including gene therapy, tissue engineering and cell therapy. Furthermore, C;ldvances in molecular and cell biology are enabling rapid development and application of these technologies and the development of new and more sensitive methods, such as nucleic acid amplification, for the characterisation of cells and the detection of adven titious agents. This chapter presents an overview of ethical principles that are essential for the proper conduct, and the continuing progress, of animal research aimed at understanding human disease. The chapter identifies fundamental principles of animal research ethics, and discusses ethical and empirical foundations of these principles. Surveillance, early detection, control and eradication of notifiable animal diseases is of critical importance for countries in order to maintain or improve their animal health status. This requires the collaboration of all stakeholders involved including animal health authorities, livestock industry and veterinary research institutions among others. Prevention, control and eradication programs must take into account the characteristics of the host (including potential reservoirs), the pathogen (transmissibility, virulence…) and the environment (temperature, animal density…) but also the socio-economic context in which they have to be implemented (highly influenced by funding availability), while at the same time guaranteeing compliance with international trade regulations. This has led to the adoption of a wide range of approaches to address the risk posed by specific pathogens in different countries, and at the same time similar strategies have yielded very different results in different regions. Ethnoepidemiology, a new area of study in the field of cancer prevention and treatment, considers characteristic behavior patterns and physical and cultural factors that may be associated with some types of cancers.
