It embodies the results of scholarly investigation into the ethnology of Rajputs, their religious and social practices, their festivals and rites, their legal and political institutions and the merits and demerits of their characters. Herein we get a real portrait of the different aspects of Rajput life: their loyalty, devotion, gallantry, chivalry as also the instability of their character, their outbreaks of passion, fears, occasional faithlessness of their chiefs and allies and, above all, their addiction to drugs. The work is divided into three volumes: each volume being sub-divided into books and chapters. Vol I deals mostly with the Geography of Rajasthan, the History of the Rajput tribes and the feudal system of their states. Vol II contains the Annals of Marwar, Bikaner, Jaisalmer and other cities of Rajasthan. Vol III comprises the annals of Amber, Haravati, Bundi and describes Shaikhawat Federation, and contains personal narratives from Udaipur to Kheroda. It has an appendix divided into seven sections and an exhaustive general index. Interspersed with several illustrations, this book is remarkable for its enlightening introduction and exegetical notes.

The Me?tiyo Ra?ho?s of Me?to, Rajasthan is a treasure for scholars of Rajput history. Richard D. Saran and Norman P. Ziegler, whose contributions to Rajput studies are well known to specialists in the field, have given us a work of deep and exacting scholarship. It is the culmination of decades devoted to the study of Middle Marwari chronicles from Rajasthan. The sources translated here provide access to the fortunes of a branch of the Jodhpur royal family, and in doing so they illuminate the larger world of Rajputs in the middle period. The Me?tiyo Ra?ho?s are significant for several reasons. Their story traces the emergence of a Rajput brotherhood into local prominence and follows the establishment of their kingdom on the eastern edge of Marva? as a defined territorial unit. The evolution of the Me?tiyos as a brotherhood passed through several clearly defined stages, including a relationship with the house of Jodhpur that ranged from mutual support among brothers to hostility and clear separation. A study of the Me?tiyos in this context provides a unique view of the formation of a strong and indpenedent Rajput cadet line, of the establishment and defense of a local territory, and of the internal relations among Rajput brotherhoods regarding issues of precedence, honor, patronage, and service. The translations are accompanied by an extensive explanatory apparatus taking various forms, which includes a valuable essay on Rajput social organization, complete genealogies, and biographies of all the major personages of the chronicles.

The volume deals with the inter-relations between agricultural production, agrarian trade, markets, towns and population of urban Rajasthan in the eighteenth-nineteenth centuries. This study also displays that how the higher receipts from sair-jihat (non-agrarian taxes) in various areas of Rajasthan, worked in the evolution of agrarian markets into qasbas. On the same line the volume shows the fall in industrial activity in the nineteenth century which broadly corresponds with the theory of de-industrialization and de-urbanization. The Hegemony of Heritage makes an original and significant contribution to our understanding of how the relationship of architectural objects and societies to the built environment changes over time. Studying two surviving medieval monuments in southern Rajasthan—the Ambika Temple in Jagat and the Ékalingji Temple Complex in Kailaspuri—the author looks beyond their divergent sectarian affiliations and patronage structures to underscore many aspects of common practice. This book offers new and extremely valuable insights into these important monuments, illuminating the entangled politics of antiquity and revealing whether a monument’s ritual record is affirmed as continuous and hence hoary or dismissed as discontinuous or reinvented through various strategies. The Hegemony of Heritage enriches theoretical constructs with ethnographic description and asks us to reexamine notions such as archive and text through the filter of sculpture and mantra.

This 1921 reprint includes an introduction from the editor, Dr William Crooke, which presents what is known about both Ja’far Sharif and the translator, G. A. Herklots. A collection of work that attempts to reflect the diversity of travel literature from the late 18th and early 19th centuries. This literature often reveals something of the cultural and gender difference of the travellers, as well as ideas on colonialism, anthropology and slavery.

The early accounts describe Bundi as originally named Pariyatra and Vrindavati respectively. Its hinduly area was termed as Prakatpur. Over time, it came to be known as Bunda Ka Nal. Jaita the last Meena chieftain, ruled until Rao Deva conquered the territory on 24th June 1341 A.D. Rao Deva and his successors established the city of Bundi at the heart of Bunda Ka Nal, and renamed the region as Harauti, signifying the abode of Haras. Eventually, the Haras expanded their domain across the Chambal river, encompassing present-day districts of Kota and Baran. While the entire reign under Haras became known as Harauti, their rulers retained the title of Rao of Bundi. During their rule, Kota was established as a separate Hara state on 21st December 1631 A.D. Nevertheless, the combined region of Bundi and Kota continued to be referred to as Harauti. This work is a monograph to stratise the conseptulized and age old inter operative multipluralstic cultural and political crescendo which transidendet through ages. As Bundi zone irrupted in history as early as mesoprotozoic period (1.5 crore BC-1 crore BC), an elevating the Aravali hills, audiotizing the serene sound of fountains, rivers, streamlets, beautified with thick forestry, rich with wild animals and unified in religious based ideologicentric academia. Despite the existence of ample Hindi literature on Bundi, there was still a need for an English edition, especially in the era of globalization when Bundi has become a prominent tourist destination. We have diligently examined literary, archival, archealogical, spectacularly, geographical, geopolitical, numismatic, thermological, carbondatist and anthropological evidences to find the insightfulness of Bundi. This efforts presents Bundi as a cultural state having the profound implicit character to reflect doctor S. Radhakrishna’s definition “History is the memory of a Nations.” Conductively it combines it’s past with its present palladium of culture also.

This is the second volume of a translation of India's most beloved and influential epic saga, the monumental Rāmāyaṇa of Vālmīki. Of the seven sections of this great Sanskrit masterpiece, the Ayodhyakāṇḍa is the most human, and it remains one of the best introductions to the social and political values of traditional India. This readable translation is accompanied by commentary that elucidates the various problems of the text—philological, aesthetic, and cultural.
