This is the standard history of Augusta County, Virginia, with chapters on the county's first settlement, first courts, Indian wars, and Augusta County in the Revolution and the Civil War. Genealogists will most appreciate the discussion of the migration trail out of Augusta County and the numerous genealogical and biographical sketches of Augusta County families.

The chief object of this Supplement is to preserve some account of many pioneer settlers of Augusta county and their immediate descendants. It would be impossible, within any reasonable limits, to include the existing generation, and hence the names of living persons are generally omitted. The writer regrets that he cannot present here sketches of other ancient and worthy families, such as the Andersons, Christians, Hamiltons, Kerrs, McPheeterses, Millers, Pattersons, Pilsons, Walkers, etc. The genealogies of several of the oldest and most distinguished families-Lewis, Preston, Houston, etc.-are omitted, because they are given fully in other publications. This volume is largely a source book of genealogical and historical materials, compiled from the public records of Rockingham, Augusta, Greenbrier, Wythe, Montgomery and other counties of Virginia, with valuable contributions from various other parts of the United States.

From its establishment in 1745, Augusta County, Virginia served as a haven for Scotch-Irish, German, and, to a lesser extent, English immigrants who failed to find economic opportunity or religious freedom in the colonial settlements along the Middle Atlantic coastline. This little known but important work contains detailed genealogies of the twenty families mentioned in the title of the work, who settled in that region of "old western Augusta" that today encompasses Bath and Highland counties, Virginia. In addition to the family histories, the compiler has provided introductory chapters on the history of German and Scotch-Irish settlement to the region; a table of family members who fought in the Colonial, Revolutionary, and Civil Wars, and a full name index with approximately 10,000 entries.

This twelfth volume of The Papers of John Marshall concludes the first scholarly annotated edition of the correspondence and papers of the great statesman and jurist. In providing an accessible documentary record of Marshall's life and legal career, this collection has become an invaluable scholarly resource for the study of American law and the Constitution in their formative stages. Volume XII covers the final years of Marshall's life, from January 1831 to his death in July 1835. It also includes an addendum of documents (mostly letters) from 1783 to 1829 that came to light after publication of their appropriate chronological volumes. More of Marshall's correspondence survives from his last years than from any other period of his life. Nullification, the Cherokee cases, the bank bill, the election of 1832, the anti-Masonic movement, slavery, and African colonization are among the topics that prompted Marshall's comments and reflections. Family letters provide intimate details of Marshall's 1831 operation for the removal of bladder stones, his companionate marriage to "dearest Polly" (who died at the end of 1831), and his relationships with his children and grandchildren. Judicial opinions published here in full include Cherokee Nation v. Georgia (1831) and Worcester v. Georgia (1832). Major editorial notes set forth the background and circumstances of these celebrated cases.
