BOOK EXCERPT:

Winner of the 2008 Critics' Choice Award presented by the American Educational Studies Association A Pulitzer Prize–winning poet who confessed the unrelenting anguish of addiction and depression, Anne Sexton (1928–1974) was also a dedicated teacher. In this book, Paula M. Salvio opens up Sexton's classroom, uncovering a teacher who willfully demonstrated that the personal could also be plural. Looking at how Sexton framed and used the personal in teaching and learning, Salvio considers the extent to which our histories—both personal and social—exert their influence on teaching. In doing so, she situates the teaching life of Anne Sexton at the center of some of the key problems and questions in feminist teaching: navigating the appropriate distance between teacher and student, the relationship between writer and poetic subject, and the relationship between emotional life and knowledge. Examining Sexton's pedagogy, with its "weird abundance" of tactics and strategies, Salvio argues that Sexton's use of the autobiographical "I" is as much a literary identity as a literal identity, one that can speak with great force to educators who recognize its vital role in the humanities classroom.

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This book investigates the key terms ‘truth’ and ‘misinformation’ in the light of Anne Sexton’s Complete Poems. The author argues that what characterizes her poems is their heightened level of transparency; poem after poem, she establishes a close relationship with the reader through recording a detailed account of her private stories. In this sense, the aim of this study hinges on demonstrating the inscription of truth in Sexton’s poems.

The Topic Of Loss And Separation In Poetry

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Seminar paper from the year 2000 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 2,0, University of Hamburg (FB Anglistik), course: Seminar II, 8 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: As the title suggests, this term paper deals with the topic of loss and separation in poetry. The texts which have been chosen as relevant material are the poems "THE BREAK AWAY " by Anne Sexton, "SHE IS AWAY" by Kenneth Rexroth and "RIVER ROAD" by Stanley Kunitz1. These three poems center around the same problem but they differ not only in the perspective of the lyrical I2 but also in certain stylistic devices. It is the aim of this term paper to point some of these differences out and to describe the concept of loss and separation, i.e.: how loss and separation are perceived in each case by the lyrical I. In this context it should be mentioned that not all relevant elements of each poem can be taken into consideration- doing so would go beyond the scope of this term paper3. Consequently, the main idea is to present some basic ideas. In some cases it will be necessary to look at certain parts of a poem in great detail. There will also be some autobiographical references to the lives of the authors - mainly to Anne Sexton and Kenneth Rexroth as only very few material has been available about Stanley Kunitz. In doing so the reader must be aware of the fact that the poems do surely not present totally autobiographical experiences- nevertheless it seems to be quite impossible to strictly keep these out of them.

The Trauma Of Freud

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Over one hundred years have passed since Sigmund Freudfirst created psychoanalysis. The new profession flourishedwithin the increasing secularization of Westernculture, and it is almost impossible to overestimate its influence.Despite its traditional aloofness from ethical questions, psychoanalysis attracted an extraordinary degree of sectarianbitterness. Original thinkers were condemned as dissidentsand renegades and the merits of individual cases havebeen frequently mixed up with questions concerning powerand ambition, as well as the future of the "movement." In TheTrauma of Freud, Paul Roazen shows how, despite this contentiousness,Freud's legacy has remained central to human selfawareness. Roazen provides a much-needed sequence and perspectiveon the memorable issues that have come up in connection withthe history of Freud's school. Topics covered include the problemof seduction, Jung's Zurich school, Ferenczi's Hungarianfollowing, and the influence of Melanie Klein and Anna Freud inEngland. Also highlighted are Lacanianism in France, ErikErikson's ego psychology, and Sandor Rado's innovations. In consideringthese historical cases and related public scandals,Roazen continually addresses important general issues concerningethics and privacy, the power of orthodoxy, creativity, andthe historiography of psychoanalysis. Throughout, he argues thatrival interpretations are a sign of the intellectual maturity andsophistication of the discipline. Vigorous debate is healthy andessential in avoiding ill-considered and dogmatic self-assurance. He observes that potential zealotry lies just below the surfaceof even the most placid psychoanalytic waters even today. Examiningthe past, so much a part of the job of scholarship, mayinvolve challenging those who might have preferred to let sleepingdogs lie. Roazen emphasizes that Freud's approach restedon the Socratic conviction that the unexamined life is not worthliving and that this constitutes the spiritual basis of its influencebeyond immediate clinical concerns. The Trauma of Freudis a major contribution to the historical literature on psychoanalysis. Paul Roazen is professor emeritus of social and political scienceat York University in Toronto, Ontario, and the author ofThe Historiography of Psychoanalysis, Freud: Political and SocialThought, Helene Deutsch: A Psychoanalyst's Life, EncounteringFreud: The Politics and Histories of Psychoanalysis, andBrother Animal: The Story of Freud and Tausk.
