BOOK EXCERPT:
Written in an easy-to-read Q&A format, The Sensory Processing Disorder Answer Book helps parents understand their child's diagnosis and develop a plan for success. Is there medication for sensory processing disorder? How can occupational therapy help? What advice can I give my child's teacher? Can you "outgrow" sensory processing disorder? How can we make social situations less of an ordeal? What are some therapeutic activities I can do with my child? It is estimated that more than 10 percent of children deal with some form of sensory processing disorder (SPD), a neurological disorder characterized by the misinterpretation of everyday sensory information, such as touch, sound, and movement. For many children, SPD can lead to academic struggles, behavioral problems, difficulties with coordination, and other issues. The Sensory Processing Disorder Answer Book is a reassuring, authoritative reference, providing sound advice and immediate answers to your most pressing questions about SPD, such as: What is sensory processing? Does SPD affect social skills? Can you see sensory processing difficulties in an infant? What is Sensory Integration Therapy? Is SPD a sign of autism? Are there tests for SPD? How do I get a prescription for occupational therapy? How do I teach my child to understand his sensory needs? Written in an easy-to-read question and answer format, The Sensory Processing Disorder Answer Book helps you fully understand SPD, conquer your fears, and seek help for your child when necessary.

BOOK EXCERPT:
This is an engaging and thoroughly well-thought out book that will help teachers, parents, carers and children in understanding why some children struggle in school as a result of sometimes undiagnosed or unrecognised challenges. A short description of a sensory/motor condition precedes each story - the challenges faced described through a variety of dinosaur characters. The story is followed up with a worksheet for the child and supporting adult to work through, and there are practical strategies recommended for both school and home. Each dinosaur has a different sensory condition, for example, Terri-dactyl who is afraid of heights and flying because his balance system is very sensitive and he can't join in with his friends because of his difficulties. Other dinosaurs and their conditions include: Developmental Coordination Disorder; Dyspraxia/proprioception; Sensory processing/Sensory Integration Disorder; Asperger's syndrome; Self Esteem Issues; Joint hypermobility; Dyslexia; and, Balance difficulties. The strategies are advisory only but simple and practical enough to be incorporated within a school or home setting with the minimum of cost. "Sensory Dinosaurs" provides an excellent platform for positive participation by the child in exploring the challenges they personally experience.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Autism is in the public spotlight now more than ever as new research and information appears almost daily. Although in many ways this is a positive development it also presents challenges to families and practitioners who want to keep up with the latest developments and are left to sift through new information by themselves to see what is credible and relevant for them. Each of us needs a personal research assistant who can determine which information we need to pay attention to and let us know how it might affect our daily work and the children we are living with or serve. Since we each don’t have our own research assistants on staff, I am delighted to recommend this wonderful book by Fred Volkmar and Lisa Wiesner. Both of these talented professional leaders have combined their scientific skills and understanding of the field with great practical experience and ideas about how research can be translated into clinical practice. The result is a book that provides the best and most comprehensive information about recent scientific developments and a splendid practical guide for how they are being implemented and what we are learning in the process. The issues are presented in all of their complexity but translated into language that is clear, direct, and easy to follow. The format also lends itself to understanding the complex issues and their implications through excellent charts, question and answer sections, and chapters that vary from describing diagnostic issues to stating very specifically how to expand and evaluate the services one is receiving. The comprehensive references and lists of additional resources also add greatly to the overall package. As a professional dedicated to understanding scientific advances and helping families and teachers to utilize them most effectively, I am very pleased to have an ally like this book available. I am very grateful to the authors for providing a very credible, practical, and relevant addition to our field to help the many advocates and family practitioners to better understand the exciting new developments and how they can be implemented in our day to day work. Those taking the time to read through this superb volume will find it time well spent that pays back dividends in many different ways. —FOREWORD by Gary B. Mesibov, Ph.D., Professor and Director of TEACCH, Treatment and Education of Autistic and Related Communication Handicapped Children University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
