BOOK EXCERPT:

Anthropomorphism could be described as a production of analogies generated by human cognition. It is present in the imaginary, mythologies, religions, and material culture of all ages. This book approaches anthropomorphism from the moment of anthropogenesis, tracing its presence in nature and material culture in prehistory and Antiquity.

BOOK EXCERPT:

The Secret Doctrine: Anthropogenesis by Helena Blavatsky is the second volume in a 3 volume set of books dealing with Theosophy and occult ideas. In this volume, the author sets out her views on the origin of humanity through what she calls 'root races' - the first of which was ethereal, the second of which lived in the Greek mythological land of Hyperborea, the third of which were humans who lived on Lemuria, and the fourth of which lived in Atlantis. The book is split into three parts. Part I includes 12 stanzas and their commentaries. Part II. The Archaic Symbolism Of The World-Religions includes the following chapters: Esoteric Tenets Corroborated in Every Scripture; Adam=Adami; The Holy of Holies. Its Degradation; On the Myth of the Fallen Angels in its Various Aspects; Is Plerôma Satan's Lair?; Prometheus, the Titan; Enoïchion-Henoch; The Symbolism of the Mystery-Names Iao and Jehovah, with their Relation to the Cross and Circle; The Upanishads in Gnostic Literature; The Cross and the Pythagorean Decad; and, The Mysteries of the Hebdomad. Part III. Addenda. Science And The Secret Doctrine Contrasted includes the chapters: Archaic, or Modern Anthropology?; The Ancestors Mankind is Offered by Science; The Fossil Relics of Man and the Anthropoid Ape; Duration of the Geological Periods, Race Cycles, and the Antiquity of Man; Organic Evolution and Creative Centres; Giants, Civilizations, and Submerged Continents Traced in History; and, Scientific and Geological Proofs of the Existence of Several Submerged

BOOK EXCERPT:

Surface diffusion and nucléation processes have been studied in the Stranski-Krastanov growth system Ag/Si(lll) with several Ultra High Vacuum Scanning Electron Microscopy techniques. Studies of this interface have a history dating back to 1961. Within this thesis, these studies are reviewed with respect in particular to structural studies*. Surface diffusion experiments were performed using ffnite patches produced by depositing through a mask with etched holes on to a Si(lll) 7x7 reconstructed surface. The deposits were made at rates between 0.2 and 1.4 MLmin onto atomically clean surfaces in the temperature range 675-860 K. The Ag/Si(lll) x >/5 RSO® intermediate Uy«r was visualised using biassed-secondsuy electron imaging and surface diffusion of Ag was observed over this layer. Measurements of nucleation densities were carried out for regions which can be considered homogeneous on the scale of the diffusion length. Patch widths and nucléation densities were both measured as a function of deposition rate sind substrate temperature. The experimental data was compared with predictions using kinetic steady-state and time-dependent models, from which material parameters were obtained. The equations defining these models sire derived within this thesis suid include a concentration dependent diffusion coefficient. The calculated values for the adsorption diffusion and binding energies {Ea, and Et) for the Ag deposit are £« = 2.45 ± 0.1 eV, E4 = 0.35 ± 0.05 eV and - 0.1010.03 eV. The uncertainties in these parameters reflect the lack of knowledge of the pre-exponential factors used in the models as much as the accuracy of the experiments. Experiments were also carried out to measure the saturation coverage of the ^/3 intermediate layer. The measurements taken indicate a coverage of 2/3 ML for this phase in agreement with several recent publications.
