BOOK EXCERPT:
Anti-racism has a long history within the profession of social work and its education. Despite an agenda within higher education which promotes internationalization and practice which recognizes diversity, little has been written to address the question of why black African students have a different experience from others on their social work educational journey. This book is based upon the authors’ experience as educators and their own research about and with black students’ experience of racism and ‘otherness’ within social work practice and education. Radical and honest in nature, it re-visits anti-racism within social work practice and education from a student focused and informed perspective based on lived experience and conversations. This book will be of interest to all social work students, educators and policy makers with an interest in anti-racism and diversity. It includes practical models and tried and tested tools to help the reader work through these issues. "Tools that can assist students in discussing uncomfortable issues in the classroom are to be welcomed, and this book is thus a valuable resource. This book offers many examples of how racism can be addressed in social work education and training. Important features of the book are the summaries of key pieces of research in each chapter, as well as, case studies and critical questions, which provide a springboard for discussion. It offers a timely reminder that discussion about race and anti-racist forms of pedagogical approaches for teaching has fallen off the agenda. It is written in an accessible style, is an engaging read, and this is a welcome addition to the literature." Dr Claudia Bernard, Goldsmiths College

BOOK EXCERPT:
Fully revised and updated throughout, this fourth edition of Lena Dominelli's influential book retains its reputation as the go-to text on anti-racist social work practice. As racism continues to present a problem in contemporary society: the growth of the Far Right, the rise of Islamophobia and the victory of the Brexit camp in the EU referendum, the need to address racist attitudes and behaviour that affect diverse groups of people in the UK remains an urgent one. A truly classic text, Anti-Racist Social Work has been providing students and practitioners with a comprehensive guide to the debates and practices on racism in contemporary society since 1988. New to this Edition: - Includes a brand new chapter on 'Social Work Across Borders' - Incorporates discussion of recent events and developments to encourage critical thinking and analyses their effect on practice - Offers examples from across the globe at both micro and macro level

BOOK EXCERPT:
This volume contends that British social work education has not fully acknowledged the evolution of structural and institutionalized racism in the United Kingdom and continental Europe. Tracing the ways in which racism toward Britain's ethnic minority groups has changed, the contributors—many of them key practitioners in the field—argue that social work training should fully integrate anti-racist practices that reflect contemporary realities. In doing so, they assert the importance of social work in addressing racism toward groups including Eastern European migrants, Roma people, and asylum seekers.

BOOK EXCERPT:
It is an acknowledged if not accepted fact that all European societies are being fundamentally transformed, and indeed perceptively unsettled, by increased migrations across nations and by the asserted presence of established minorities within their borders. The scale and speed at which these transformations have taken place have brought in their wake considerable social impacts and no small measure of fear and anxiety. Encounters with such diversity are part and parcel of the social work task, and learning how to negotiate them should be a de facto aspect of the training and continuous professional development of social workers and other social professions. However, the moral and political dimensions of the role, scope and nature of the social work task in responding appropriately to these changed and changing realities are rather more contested. This volume addresses many dimensions of the response to issues of race and ethnicity in social work practice in Europe. It extends the debates on inter-cultural and race equality practice in social work through a stimulating and innovative collection of contributions. This book was originally published as a special issue of the European Journal of Social Work.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Building on the successful 1st edition, this reader brings together some of the most significant ideas that have informed social work practice over the last fifty years. At the same time as presenting these foundational extracts, the book includes commentaries that allow the reader to understand the selected extracts on their own terms as well as to be aware of their relations to each other and to the wider social work context. There is no settled view or easy consensus about what social work is and should be, and the ideas reflected in this volume are themselves diverse and complex. The world of social work has changed greatly over the last ten years, and this new edition reflects that change with new material on the decolonisation of social work knowledges, the greater emphasis on inter-disciplinarity and co-production and the new concern for identities. With an accessible introduction to contextualise the selections, the book is divided into three main sections, each presenting key texts drawn from a wide range of perspectives: psychological, sociological, philosophical, educational and political, as well as perspectives that are grounded in the experiences of practitioners and those who use services, which have contributed to the development of: the profession of social work knowledge and values for social work and practice in social work. By providing students and practitioners with an easy way into reading first-hand some of the most interesting, foundational texts of the subject, it will be required reading for all undergraduate and postgraduate programmes and professionals undertaking post-qualifying training.

BOOK EXCERPT:
The Routledge International Handbook of Social Work Education provides an authoritative overview of current understanding through coverage of key debates, exploring the state of play in particular social work education fields and reflecting on where the future might be taking us. The overall aim of the Handbook is to further develop pedagogic research and scholarship for social work education. Drawing on medical education as an exemplar, the contributions view social work education as a specialism and a field of expertise that counts in the same way as research programmes in more traditional areas of social work practice. The chapters are concerned with the theory and practice of social work education at all levels; they are accessible, conceptually clear, research based where appropriate, critically reflective and ethically underpinned. The Handbook is organised into seven sections that reflect the proposed themes and sub-themes covering: Social work education in context: the western drivers Emerging and re-emerging social work education The scholarship of learning and teaching New insights into field education New directions in learning and teaching Future challenges in social work education This handbook presents a contribution to the process of exchange and dialogue which is essential to global social work education. It brings together professional knowledge and lived experience, both universal and local, and will be an essential reference for social work educators, researchers, students and professionals.
