Apologetic Works 3

BOOK EXCERPT:

When Socinianism was at the height of its power, Andrew Fuller challenged it in its self-professed point of greatest strength --the virtue encouraged by its principles of theistic rationality. Do the extended implications of its principles compare favorably with Calvinism in the development of virtue? Using their own writings and the admissions they make concerning piety and virtue among Socinians, Fuller compared both systems in their tendency to convert profligates to a life of holiness, to convert professed unbelievers, their development of a standard of morality, to encourage love to God, candor and benevolence toward men, encourage humility and charity, promote love for Christ and veneration of Scripture, develop happiness, cheerfulness, gratitude, obedience, and heavenly-mindedness in the followers of the respective systems. If challenged that he is being judgmental and has focused on subjective criteria, Fuller replied that he is merely engaging the Socinians at the place where they have invited investigation. Fuller intended to lay bare the emptiness of the Socinian boast to virtue. The work first was published in 1793.

Retrieving Apologetics

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Given the popes' recent statements of their desires to implement the New Evangelization, it is imperative that Catholic theologians and other intellectually engaged laypersons retrieve the vital discipline of apologetics. For, the New Evangelization places particular emphasis on "reproposing the Gospel to those who have experienced a crisis of faith . . . due to secularization." One salient method of Catholic apologetics used to be characterized by three demonstrations, each of which assumes the conclusions established in the previous step(s). Some might think that this classical method of apologetics has been abandoned in the postconciliar Church, but Siniscalchi's book updates it. Unlike the classical apologetics of the preconciliar era, Siniscalchi engages contemporary scholarship in a variety of academic disciplines, such as philosophy, history, biblical studies, sociology, and theology, to develop the steps that are necessary for showing the reasonableness of faith.

Apologetics For The Working Christian

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

All believers experience the challenge of building understanding and defending the disposition of their God and their belief when the very basis of their faith is being questioned. This book is for those who are not experts in the field of apologetics but have a passion to make Christ known and accepted by others in their workplace and daily life. Essential subjects and Scriptures common to Christian apologetics and evangelism are examined using the "great commission" of Jesus as recorded in Matthew 28:16-20 as a foundation. Simple, understandable answers are given to critical questions that a Christian may confront, such as, Does God Exist? Is Jesus the Christ? Is the Bible True? What is the importance of baptism? Did the resurrection of Jesus really happen? What are the essential teachings of personal evangelism? What are the components of the Great Commission of Christ, and how do we obey it? Dr. Pickard has been a Christian for over fifty years and has held executive positions in business, education and government including executive level management positions in major universities, a private corporation, a government authority and city management. He has served his community on a hospital board, community service boards and regional councils.
