BOOK EXCERPT:
In Backwoods Witchcraft, Jake Richards offers up a folksy stew of family stories, lore, omens, rituals, and conjure crafts that he learned from his great-grandmother, his grandmother, and his grandfather, a Baptist minister who Jake remembers could "rid someone of a fever with an egg or stop up the blood in a wound." The witchcraft practiced in Appalachia is very much a folk magic of place, a tradition that honors the seen and unseen beings that inhabit the land as well as the soil, roots, and plant life. The materials and tools used in Appalachia witchcraft are readily available from the land. This "grounded approach" will be of keen interest to witches and conjure folk regardless of where they live. Readers will be guided in how to build relationships with the spirits and other beings that dwell around them and how to use the materials and tools that are readily available on the land where one lives. This book also provides instructions on how to create a working space and altar and make conjure oils and powders. A wide array of tried-and-true formulas are also offered for creating wealth, protecting one from gossip, spiritual cleansing, and more.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Pure Joy and Fierce Competition Tonn thrills at the sight of airhorses, even after tough months as a rider-in-training. Knowing every day brings him closer to a pairing of his own. And the ultimate freedom of taking to the skies. But conflicts with other riders prove the bigger challenge. Can Tonn learn to overcome difficulties and trust himself? Also available in the collection Fantastic Side Trips: Side Characters Take Center Stage An excerpt from Trusting Their Magic: The Match That Defines a Lifetime Tonn jumped at Master Adur's sharp voice. "How did the airhorses learn the flight pattern we're observing right now? Tonn?" He was certain he knew the answer, but a rush of nerves sent his belly twisting anyway. "Same way landhorses do, or fish or fowl or anything else, Master. They're playing. Or at least that's how it starts out." "Exactly so." Master Adur's warm smile balanced out her sometimes harsh tones and fierce expressions. "The wild colony of airhorses not far from here does much the same every morning when the weather's fair. Have any of you had a chance to observe them in their own play?" Every hand shot up. Tonn took every chance he got to take the long walk out past Maestar's towering city wall, cutting through the low, wide passage out to the rocky cliffs overlooking the sea. He wasn't the only one who made the trip by the faintest light of dawn, hoping to catch a display even more breathtaking than the one over their heads.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Although southern Appalachia is popularly seen as a purely white enclave, blacks have lived in the region from early times. Some hollows and coal camps are in fact almost exclusively black settlements. The selected readings in this new book offer the first comprehensive presentation of the black experience in Appalachia. Organized topically, the selections deal with the early history of blacks in the region, with studies of the black communities, with relations between blacks and whites, with blacks in coal mining, and with political issues. Also included are a section on oral accounts of black experiences and an analysis of black Appalachian demography. The contributors range from Carter Woodson and W. E. B. Du Bois to more recent scholars such as Theda Perdue and David A. Corbin. An introduction by the editors provides an overall context for the selections. Blacks in Appalachia focuses needed attention on a neglected area of Appalachian studies. It will be a valuable resource for students of Appalachia and of black history.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Turkic people have been migrating to America for many centuries, but this significant influx has been largely unrecognized. In From Anatolia to Appalachia, Scolnick and Kennedy initiate a dialogue regarding this neglected area of American history and culture. This volume begins the communication with an essay reviewing existing evidence followed by interviews with knowledgeable persons about selected aspects of the population movements. An introduction and conclusion give focus and unity to the various elements of the dialogue. It is anticipated that this and subsequent volumes will (1) give information regarding studies of the movements of Turkic peoples to America; (2) broaden understanding of American history and society; (3) allow many, especially in the Southeast Atlantic region of the US, to better appreciate their background and place in American society; (4) stimulate interest in the main subject or aspects of it, both in the US and abroad; (5) tie together disparate aspects of the subject as well as the persons studying them; and (6) add to the general knowledge regarding migrations of peoples over many centuries. In sum, this dialogue intends not only to inform and interest others, but also to pull together available research on the subject and stimulate new research in this and related areas of study.
