These proceedings were prepared in connection with the international conference Approximation Theory XIII, which was held March 7–10, 2010 in San Antonio, Texas. The conference was the thirteenth in a series of meetings in Approximation Theory held at various locations in the United States, and was attended by 144 participants. Previous conferences in the series were held in Austin, Texas (1973, 1976, 1980, 1992), College Station, Texas (1983, 1986, 1989, 1995), Nashville, Tennessee (1998), St. Louis, Missouri (2001), Gatlinburg, Tennessee (2004), and San Antonio, Texas (2007). Along with the many plenary speakers, the contributors to this proceedings provided inspiring talks and set a high standard of exposition in their descriptions of new directions for research. Many relevant topics in approximation theory are included in this book, such as abstract approximation, approximation with constraints, interpolation and smoothing, wavelets and frames, shearlets, orthogonal polynomials, univariate and multivariate splines, and complex approximation.

These proceedings were prepared in connection with the 14th International Conference on Approximation Theory, which was held April 7-10, 2013 in San Antonio, Texas. The conference was the fourteenth in a series of meetings in Approximation Theory held at various locations in the United States. The included invited and contributed papers cover diverse areas of approximation theory with a special emphasis on the most current and active areas such as compressed sensing, isogeometric analysis, anisotropic spaces, radial basis functions and splines. Classical and abstract approximation is also included. The book will be of interest to mathematicians, engineers\ and computer scientists working in approximation theory, computer-aided geometric design, numerical analysis and related application areas.

Over the last 20 years, multiscale methods and wavelets have revolutionized the field of applied mathematics by providing an efficient means of encoding isotropic phenomena. Directional multiscale systems, particularly shearlets, are now having the same dramatic impact on the encoding of multidimensional signals. Since its introduction about five years ago, the theory of shearlets has rapidly developed and gained wide recognition as the superior way of achieving a truly unified treatment in both a continuous and a digital setting. By now, it has reached maturity as a research field, with rich mathematics, efficient numerical methods, and various important applications.

The articles of this collection were originated from the International Conference in Approximation Theory, held in Savannah, GA in 2017, and organized by the editors of this volume.

This thesis demonstrates techniques that provide faster and more accurate solutions to a variety of problems in machine learning and signal processing. The author proposes a "greedy" algorithm, deriving sparse solutions with guarantees of optimality. The use of this algorithm removes many of the inaccuracies that occurred with the use of previous models.

This book provides a systematic survey of classical and recent results on hyperbolic cross approximation. Motivated by numerous applications, the last two decades have seen great success in studying multivariate approximation. Multivariate problems have proven to be considerably more difficult than their univariate counterparts, and recent findings have established that multivariate mixed smoothness classes play a fundamental role in high-dimensional approximation. The book presents essential findings on and discussions of linear and nonlinear approximations of the mixed smoothness classes. Many of the important open problems explored here will provide both students and professionals with inspirations for further research.

Paul Butzer, who is considered the academic father and grandfather of many prominent mathematicians, has established one of the best schools in approximation and sampling theory in the world. He is one of the leading figures in approximation, sampling theory, and harmonic analysis. Although on April 15, 2013, Paul Butzer turned 85 years old, remarkably, he is still an active research mathematician. In celebration of Paul Butzer’s 85th birthday, New Perspectives on Approximation and Sampling Theory is a collection of invited chapters on approximation, sampling, and harmonic analysis written by students, friends, colleagues, and prominent active mathematicians. Topics covered include approximation methods using wavelets, multi-scale analysis, frames, and special functions. Previously, he was co-founder and CEO of start-up company, CardioDigital Ltd (and later co-founded its US subsidiary, CardioDigital Inc) - a company concerned with the development of novel wavelet-based methods for biosignal analysis. He has a master’s degree in engineering and a PhD in fluid mechanics, both from the University of Glasgow, Scotland (founded 1451). His former academic life as a tenured professor of fluids engineering included the output of a large number of technical papers, covering many aspects of engineering and bioengineering, and two textbooks: Fractals and Chaos: An Illustrated Course and the first edition of The Illustrated Wavelet Transform Handbook. At the time of publication, the author has over 100 issued US patents concerning a wide range of medical device technologies, many of these concerning the wavelet transform analysis of biosignals. He is both a Chartered Engineer and Chartered Physicist.
