Who were key figures in the making of European monetary union? Which ideas did they contribute to ensuring that monetary union would be sustainable? How prescient were they in identifying the necessary and sufficient foundations of a sustainable monetary union? This book provides the first systematic historical examination of key architects of European monetary union in the period before its launch in 1999. Using original archival and interview research, it investigates the intellectual and career backgrounds of these architects, their networking skills, and their own doubts and reservations about the way in which monetary union was being constructed. In the light of the later Euro Area, Architects of the Euro deals critically with not just their contribution to the making of European monetary union but also their legacy. The book brings together a distinguished group of scholars working on the history of Economic and Monetary Union.

The legal relationship between architects and clients suffers from two basic tensions that have been debated in several European countries. First, the market for design of buildings is not the exclusive domain of architects anymore. Other disciplines have gradually encroached on the architect's core activities. Many new forms of contract have been developed in the construction industry. These market models no longer fit the traditional design contract, departing from the idea that an architect designs a structure that is fit for its purpose and subsequently supervises the realization of the design by the building contractor. Second, designing buildings is a low yield/high risk endeavor. If the obligations of architects under the design contract are not performed well, they are exposed to severe liabilities which may cause serious financial problems. Detailed comparative research on design contracts shows that rule makers have difficulties in dealing with these two tensions. In Europe, considerable differences exist regarding the national rules that apply to the contractual relationship between architects and clients. Therefore, in this study, four regulation issues have been investigated that deal with establishing rules to govern the two tensions: market entry regulation, architect liability, limitation of architect liability, and professional liability insurance. In order to evaluate these regulation issues, a law and economics perspective is applied. The book will help to establish which combination of regulation options is likely to lead to more efficient outcomes. It provides insights in what is the best way to deal with the two tensions in the relationship between architects and clients, and it contributes to establishing a new design for European architect law.

This publication is aimed to support two MoMoWo traveling exhibitions which will be presented in six European countries in two years (2016-2017): indoor exhibition catalogue “100 Works in 100 Years. European Women in Architecture and Design. 1918-2018”, and outdoor exhibition “Women’s Tale. A Reportage on Women Designers”. Exhibition catalogue 100 Works in 100 Years. European Women in Architecture and Design. 1918-2018 brings together a selection of some of the most significant and representative examples of European architecture and design created by 100 women from the end of the First World War up until today. The number of works is symbolic, as ‘one hundred’ could also mean ‘countless’ as in the Latin word centium. While, the number of authors –each work has a different author– derives from MoMoWo’s choice to represent many different creators, consequently popularising lesser known figures, too. It includes biographies of women architects, civil engineers, furniture and industrial designers, urban planners, interior and landscape designers. It represents the main trends and major ‘schools’ of architecture and design all over Europe. The biographical data covers education and training, professional histories, networks women have operated in, including informal societies, memberships in trade bodies and associations, their profile as international, national, local and regional designers, as well as looking at how women have promoted their work i.e. in exhibitions, publications, competition entries, etc. The catalogue entries are followed by thirteen thematic essays on women architects and designers and by the outdoor exhibition catalogue “Women’s Tale. A Reportage on Women Designers”, where photographs by ten finalists of the MoMoWo Photo competition are presented. By seeking to identify women who worked in Europe as well as European women who worked outside Europe over last 100 years, the main aim of this catalogue is to increase the awareness of historians and the general public about their enormous contribution to architecture and design, and indirectly providing accessibility to their works. _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ Razstavni katalog 100 Works in 100 Years. The built environment of former socialist countries is often deemed uniform and drab, an apt reflection of a repressive regime. Latin America has been an important place for architecture for many decades. Masters like Barragán, Dieste, Lina Bo Bardi, and Niemeyer pointed the way for architectural design all over the world, and they continue to do so today. Their approach to colors, materials, and walls had a deep and lasting influence on architectural modernism. Since then, however – and especially in the last fifteen years – architecture on the continent has continued to evolve, and a lively and extremely creative architecture scene has developed. The work of Latin American architects and city planners is often guided by social issues, for example, the approach to informal settlements on the outskirts of big cities, the scarcity of housing and public space, the availability of affordable transportation, and the important role of cultural infrastructure – such as schools, libraries, and sports facilities – as a catalyst for neighborhoods. Within this context, the book considers numerous projects that have prompted discussion and provided fresh impetus all across Latin America. Outstanding projects like the Santo Domingo Library in Medellin, Colombia, by Giancarlo Mazzanti; Alberto Kalach’s Liceo Franco-Mexicano in Mexico; and the works of Alejandro Aravena in Chile show that recent Latin American architecture is more than capable of holding its own beside the works of the founders. Felipe Hernández is an architect and professor of Architectural Design, History and Theory at The University of Liverpool. He attended an MA in Architecture and Critical Theory, graduating with distinction in 1998, and received his PhD from the University of Nottingham in 2003. He has taught at the Bartlett School of Architecture (UCL), The Universities of Nottingham, Sheffield, East London and Nottingham Trent in the United Kingdom as well as at Brown University and Roger Williams University in USA. Felipe has published numerous essays and articles examining the situation of contemporary Latin American cities and revealing the multiplicity of architectural practices that operate simultaneously in the constant re-shaping of the continent’s cities.
