Arithmetic Applied Mathematics

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Arithmetic Applied Mathematics deals with concepts of arithmetic applied mathematics and uses a computer, rather than a continuum, approach to the deterministic theories of particle mechanics. Models of classical physical phenomena are formulated from both Newtonian and special relativistic mechanics using only arithmetic. Definitions of energy and momentum are presented that are identical to those of continuum mechanics. Comprised of nine chapters, this book begins by exploring discrete modeling as it relates to Newtonian mechanics and special relativistic mechanics, paying particular attention to gravity. The reader is then introduced to long-range forces such as gravitation and short-range forces such as molecular attraction and repulsion; the N-body problem; and conservative and non-conservative models of complex physical phenomena. Subsequent chapters focus on the foundational concepts of special relativity; arithmetic special relativistic mechanics in one space dimension and three space dimensions; and Lorentz invariant computations. This monograph will be of interest to students and practitioners in the fields of mathematics and physics.

A Century Of Mathematical Meetings

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This features contributions by and about some of the luminaries of American mathematics. Included here are essays based on presentations made during the symposium Celebration of 100 Years of Annual Meetings, held at the AMS meeting in Cincinnati in 1994. The papers in this collection form a vibrant collage of mathematical personalities. This book weaves a tapestry of mathematical life in the United States, with emphasis on the past seventy years. Photographs, old and recent, further decorate that tapestry. There are many stories to be told about the making of mathematics and the personalities of those who meet to share it. This collection offers a celebration in words and pictures of a century of American mathematical life.

BOOK EXCERPT:

Divided into two volumes, the book begins with a pedagogical presentation of some of the basic theory, with chapters on biochemical reactions, diffusion, excitability, wave propagation and cellular homeostasis. The second, more extensive part discusses particular physiological systems, with chapters on calcium dynamics, bursting oscillations and secretion, cardiac cells, muscles, intercellular communication, the circulatory system, the immune system, wound healing, the respiratory system, the visual system, hormone physiology, renal physiology, digestion, the visual system and hearing. New chapters on Calcium Dynamics, Neuroendocrine Cells and Regulation of Cell Function have been included. Reviews from first edition: Keener and Sneyd's Mathematical Physiology is the first comprehensive text of its kind that deals exclusively with the interplay between mathematics and physiology. Writing a book like this is an audacious act! -Society of Mathematical Biology Keener and Sneyd's is unique in that it attempts to present one of the most important subfields of biology and medicine, physiology, in terms of mathematical "language", rather than organizing materials around mathematical methodology. -SIAM review

Mathematical Models And Their Analysis

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

A great deal can be learned through modeling and mathematical analysis about real-life phenomena, even before numerical simulations are used to accurately portray the specific configuration of a situation. Scientific computing also becomes more effective and efficient if it is preceded by some preliminary analysis. These important advantages of mathematical modeling are demonstrated by models of historical importance in an easily understandable way. The organization of Mathematical Models and Their Analysis groups models by the issues that need to be addressed about the phenomena. The new approach shows how mathematics effective for one modeled phenomenon can be used to analyze another unrelated problem. For instance, the mathematics of differential equations useful in understanding the classical physics of planetary models, fluid motion, and heat conduction is also applicable to the seemingly unrelated phenomena of traffic flow and congestion, offshore sovereignty, and regulation of overfishing and deforestation. The formulation and in-depth analysis of these and other models on modern social issues, such as the management of exhaustible and renewable resources in response to consumption demands and economic growth, are of increasing concern to students and researchers of our time. The modeling of current social issues typically starts with a simple but meaningful model that may not capture all the important elements of the phenomenon. Predictions extracted from such a model may be informative but not compatible with all known observations; so the model may require improvements. The cycle of model formulation, analysis, interpretation, and assessment is made explicit for the modeler to repeat until a model is validated by consistency with all known facts.

The Oxford Handbook Of Philosophy Of Mathematics And Logic

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Mathematics and logic have been central topics of concern since the dawn of philosophy. Since logic is the study of correct reasoning, it is a fundamental branch of epistemology and a priority in any philosophical system. Philosophers have focused on mathematics as a case study for general philosophical issues and for its role in overall knowledge- gathering. Today, philosophy of mathematics and logic remain central disciplines in contemporary philosophy, as evidenced by the regular appearance of articles on these topics in the best mainstream philosophical journals; in fact, the last decade has seen an explosion of scholarly work in these areas. This volume covers these disciplines in a comprehensive and accessible manner, giving the reader an overview of the major problems, positions, and battle lines. The 26 contributed chapters are by established experts in the field, and their articles contain both exposition and criticism as well as substantial development of their own positions. The essays, which are substantially self-contained, serve both to introduce the reader to the subject and to engage in it at its frontiers. Certain major positions are represented by two chapters--one supportive and one critical. The Oxford Handbook of Philosophy of Math and Logic is a ground-breaking reference like no other in its field. It is a central resource to those wishing to learn about the philosophy of mathematics and the philosophy of logic, or some aspect thereof, and to those who actively engage in the discipline, from advanced undergraduates to professional philosophers, mathematicians, and historians.

Wavelet Methods In Mathematical Analysis And Engineering

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This book gives a comprehensive overview of both the fundamentals of wavelet analysis and related tools, and of the most active recent developments towards applications. It offers a state-of-the-art in several active areas of research where wavelet ideas, or more generally multiresolution ideas have proved particularly effective. The main applications covered are in the numerical analysis of PDEs, and signal and image processing. Recently introduced techniques such as Empirical Mode Decomposition (EMD) and new trends in the recovery of missing data, such as compressed sensing, are also presented. Applications range for the reconstruction of noisy or blurred images, pattern and face recognition, to nonlinear approximation in strongly anisotropic contexts, and to the classification tools based on multifractal analysis.
