BOOK EXCERPT:
Founded by Robert Beckand, Rens Muis and Pieter Vos in 1997, the Rotterdam-based graphic design studio 75B has designed everything from Nike posters and museum logos to books, magazines, flyers, cards, exhibitions and full-scale architectural interventions. Initially famed for their design work in European youth and music culture, the studio also spans the world of design and art, having exhibited artwork internationally (in 2006 they were artists in residence at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena). In 2009 Beckand left the studio and Muis and Vos continued working together, developing a style that has been described as "conceptual, simple, no-nonsense, ironical and tongue-in-cheek." Omitting the competition- winning house style designs and logos, The Work of 75B highlights the firm's more experimental projects--works that may not have direct applications or clients.

BOOK EXCERPT:
"Since the 2011 Arab Spring street art has been a vehicle for political discourse in the Middle East, and has generated much discussion in both the popular media and academia. Yet, this conversation has generalised street art and identified it as a singular form with identical styles and objectives throughout the region. Street art's purpose is, however, defined by the socio-cultural circumstances of its production. Middle Eastern artists thus adopt distinctive methods in creating their individual work and responding to their individual environments. Here, in this new book, Sabrina De Turk employs rigorous visual analysis to explore the diversity of Middle Eastern street art and uses case studies of countries as varied as Egypt, Tunisia, Lebanon, Palestine, Bahrain and Oman to illustrate how geographic specifics impact upon its function and aesthetic. Her book will be of significant interest to scholars specialising in art from the Middle East and North Africa and those who bring an interdisciplinary perspective to Middle East studies."--Bloomsbury Publishing.

BOOK EXCERPT:
For the designers operating under the name 75B the domain of the arts is an indispensable field of activity. They consider autonomous artistic research to be an inbuilt component of their practice. For them the field of the arts is the place to engage with the basics. No goal, no immediate perspective on possible applications, no client. The fundamentals of graphic design and those of the fine arts are so far apart that 75B has amassed an ambivalent body of work. This duality reveals itself in communicative work done for clients alongside experimental work done for themselves.

BOOK EXCERPT:
"This book is available as open access through the Bloomsbury Open Access programme and is available on www.bloomsburycollections.com. The so-called Arab Spring challenged conventional wisdom and certainties about the Arab world where its effects continue to be felt as well as in the diaspora. This book provides an original contribution to current social and cultural theory on Arab social movements by giving a fuller historical and critical treatment of contemporary artistic and cultural production from the region and beyond. Thematically structured and covering culture, media, politics, and literary studies, the book uses a range of theoretical material that engages readers in three key ways. First, it adopts a critical standpoint with respect to the term "Arab Spring," recognizing the multiple interpretations and varied geographical, historical, and political realities of the term. Second, its focus on carefully selected case studies - namely, Egypt, Tunis, Syria, and Yemen - adds depth to analysis of the cultural, literary and artistic dimensions that operate fluidly across the Arab world. Third, it presents a methodological case study for the growing community of researchers involved in interdisciplinary education. Together, the contributors to the book show how the interplay of politics, culture, and media across varied locations has and continues to shape emergent Arab social forms and a region on the cusp of historical and cultural change."--

BOOK EXCERPT:
Since 2011, the art of the Arab uprisings has been the subject of much scholarly and popular attention. Yet the role of artists, writers and filmmakers themselves as social actors working under extraordinary conditions has been relatively neglected. Drawing on critical readings of Bourdieu's Field Theory, this book explores the production of culture in Arab social spaces in 'crisis'. In ten case studies, contributors examine a wide range of countries and conflicts, from Algeria to the Arab countries of the Gulf. They discuss among other things the impact of Western public diplomacy organisations on the arts scene in post-revolutionary Cairo and the consequences of dwindling state support for literary production in Yemen. Providing a valuable source of empirical data for researchers, the book breaks new ground in adapting Bourdieu's theory to the particularities of cultural production in the Middle East and North Africa.
