BOOK EXCERPT:
In February 1903, a 30-second film titled Sherlock Holmes Baffled was released by American Mutoscope and Biograph Company, the first known adaptation of the work of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Over the years hundreds of adaptation and parodies of Conan Doyles works have been released. Though he is most closely associated with Sherlock Holmes, other Conan Doyle works have found their way to the silver screen, including the science fiction classic The Lost World (1925). The major adaptations of all of Conan Doyles literary works are fully covered here, plus a 1927 one-reel documentary in which the author talks about his work and his psychic beliefs. The focus is on how faithful the adaptations are to the authors own work and the overall effectiveness of the film.

BOOK EXCERPT:
"Jaffe Organizes Doyle's diverse canon by genre and discusses it in the context of the late 19th century romantic revival. Devoting two chapters to the Holmes novels and stories, she shows Doyle fusing romantic assumptions with rationalist certainities, to create a uniquely popular hero: the knight-errant as master detective. Jaffe promotes renewed attention for Doyle's historical novels and scientific romances." Publisher's note.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Many engage in the quest, but no biographer yet has captured the enigmatic Doyle. Conan Doyle deliberately obscured his life, and his heirs remain keen to guard his papers. Yet the contributors—Conan Doyle scholars and collectors, English literature professors, research librarians, editors, and critics—concur that better biographical material is needed and that now—100 years after the birth of Sherlock Holmes—is an appropriate time to examine the biographical problems. They concentrate on the ways Conan Doyle himself and his biographers have handled these problems—or failed to handle them. In the process of evaluating and criticizing earlier biographical efforts, the contributors present an effective portrait of Conan Doyle. All agree, however, that much more remains to be done, and they suggest fruitful areas for further research.
