BOOK EXCERPT:

Arthur Mee (1875-1943), best remembered as the creator of The Children's Encyclopaedia, was more than a popular editor, journalist and travel writer; for a generation of young readers and their parents, the name Arthur Mee truly meant something. Formany in his audience, the narratives and discourses embedded within his writing tied together and legitimised a trinity of beliefs that lay at the heart of his nonconformist faith and character: God, England and Empire. Despite the enormous appeal of his many published works, which during the first half of the twentieth century saw him become a household name and a major publishing brand, Mee has remained an ethereal figure. In Arthur Mee, the first full-length account of Mee's life since 1946, Crawford draws upon a range of Mee's correspondence to offer for the first time a realistic picture of the man at work and at home as an antidote to the overly romanticised image attached to his name. The book places Mee's work within the wider cultural, political and social context of an England undergoing unparalleled societal change and technological advancement. Scholars of the history of education, children's literature and beyond will find much of interest in these pages, and childhooddevotees to Mee's publications may well find themselves transported back to a time of wonder, imagination and hope.

Why Be A Christian

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

His active service spanned the last six decades of the twentieth century; but even in "retirement" his influence continues unabated. A graduate of Mercer University and the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, he served as pastor of three Georgia Baptist churches and then as professor of Christianity at Mercer. He is the epitome of the scholar/pastor. These sermons, which cover such subjects as Jesus Christ, the Christian life, holy days, the family, evangelism, and missions, reverberate with a deep love for the Lord, for the church, for the Bible, and for people. The book will be a treasure to those who had the privilege of being parishioners or students of Dr. Giddens. It will also serve as a valuable resource to students and practitioners of preaching. First, it offers one of the finest examples available of a "classical" preaching style that was practiced in the mid-twentieth century. Second, it shows how careful scholarship, deep piety, warm-hearted compassion, and prophetic challenge can be combined in a sermon. Third, it contains material that will offer stimulus and inspiration for the crafting of sermons today. These sermons inspire, teach, and convict. These are the words of a man who has made a difference in thousands of lives.

Katharine Briggs

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Katharine Briggs made an indelible mark on the world of folklore with her compilation of the Dictionary of British Folktales in the English Languages, while her subsequent Dictionary of Fairies confirmed her already distinguished place among British Folklorists. Briggs's initial academic interest while at Oxford University was in seventeenth-century literature and the Civil War. Upon leaving Oxford she pursued amateur dramatics and worked for the Guide Movement, and during the Second World War she served in the Women's Auxiliary Air Force. It was here, perhaps, that her personality fully matured; among other activities she delighted her fellows with her remarkable gift for story-telling. After the war, her career as a folklorist began to blossom. As if to make up for lost time, she spent the last twenty years of her life writing and lecturing almost continually. As well as her books on folklore, she gained renown for her children's books Kate Crackernuts and Hobberdy Dick. She was responsible for revitalising the Folklore Society and as its President, she laid the foundations of the Society as it is today. Hilda Davidson's biography brings to life a remarkable woman whose combination of academic excellence and natural gift for narrative found her friends all over the world.
