This book offers a comprehensive approach to the question of how artificial intelligence (AI) impacts politics, economy, and the society today. This book studies how technological solutions can be used to alleviate the current state of legal systems, with their clogged up courtrooms and inefficient conflict resolution methods. It reviews the shortcomings and disadvantages of traditional and alternative conflict resolution methods and turns to Artificial Intelligence for problem-solving techniques and solutions. The book is divided into four parts. The first part presents a general and systematic analysis of the current state of the legal systems, identifying the main problems and their causes. It then moves on to present UM Court: a framework for testing and prototyping conflict resolution services. This framework was developed with the objective of using Artificial Intelligence techniques to build a service environment for conflict resolution. The third part of the book takes a step into the future by analyzing the use of Intelligent Environments in the support of conflict management and resolution. It describes the approach taken and the experiments performed in the Intelligent Systems Lab of the University of Minho. The final part of the book contains the conclusions and shows the potential advantages of the use of Intelligent Environments as a way to implement better conflict resolution procedures (virtual or real), in which all the participants have access to more and better information and are able to take better informed decisions.

The present book includes a set of selected papers from the First International Conf- ence on Agents and Artificial Intelligence (ICAART 2009), held in Porto, Portugal, during January 19–21, 2009. The conference was organized in two simultaneous tracks: “Artificial Intelligence and Agents.” The book is based on the same structure. ICAART 2009 received 161 paper submissions, from more than 37 different co- tries in all continents. After a blind review process, only 26 where accepted as full papers, of which 21 were selected for inclusion in this book, based on the classifi- tions provided by the Program Committee. The selected papers reflect the interdis- plinary nature of the conference. The diversity of topics is an important feature of this conference, enabling an overall perception of several important scientific and tech- logical trends. These high-quality standards will be maintained and reinforced at ICAART 2010, to be held in Valencia, Spain, and in future editions of this conf- ence. Furthermore, ICAART 2009 included five plenary keynote lectures given by Juan Carlos Augusto (University of Ulster), Marco Dorigo (IRIDIA, Free University of Brussels), Timo Honkela (Helsinki University of Technology), Edward H. Shortliffe (Arizona State University) and Paulo Urbano (University of Lisbon). We would like to express our appreciation to all of them and in particular to those who took the time to contribute with a paper to this book.

This double volume book set constitutes the refereed proceedings of 4th International Conference, AI-HCI 2023, held as part of the 25th International Conference, HCI International 2023, which was held virtually in Copenhagen, Denmark in July 2023. The total of 1578 papers and 396 posters included in the HCII 2023 proceedings was carefully reviewed and selected from 7472 submissions. The first volume focuses on topics related to Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence, explainability, transparency and trustworthiness, ethics and fairness, as well as AI-supported user experience design. The second volume focuses on topics related to AI for language, text, and speech-related tasks, human-AI collaboration, AI for decision-support and perception analysis, and innovations in AI-enabled systems.

The papers in this volume comprise the refereed proceedings of the conference 'Artificial Intelligence in Theory and Practice' (IFIP AI 2006), which formed part of the 19th World Computer Congress of IFIP, the International Federation for Information Processing (WCC- 2006), in Santiago, Chile in August 2006. The conference is organised by the IFIP Technical Committee on Artificial Intelligence (Technical Committee 12) and its Working Group 12.5 (Artificial Intelligence Applications). All papers were reviewed by at least two members of our Programme Committee. The best papers were selected for the conference and are included in this volume. The international nature of IFIP is amply reflected in the large number of countries represented here. The conference featured invited talks by Rose Dieng, John Atkinson, John Debenham and myself. IFIP AI 2006 also included the Second IFIP Symposium on Professional Practice in Artificial Intelligence, organised by Professor John Debenham, which ran alongside the refereed papers. I should like to thank the conference chair. Professor Debenham for all his efforts in organising the Symposium and the members of our programme committee for reviewing an unexpectedly large number of papers to a very tight deadline. This is the latest in a series of conferences organised by IFIP Technical Committee 12 dedicated to the techniques of Artificial Intelligence and their real-world applications.
