This volume is the result of collaborative research between ASEAN and South Asian scholars and deals with economic relations between two important regions.

A recent study by the Asian Development Bank notes that by 2050, Asia's per capita income would rise six-fold to reach Europe's levels today, one of many indications of Asia's “re-emergence”. By then, Asia's share of global GDP would have doubled and it would have regained the dominant economic position it once held some 300 years ago before the industrial revolution.What is less well-known is that during the previous eras of globalization, Asia was also regionally integrated and globally connected. For the purpose of this study, countries in ASEAN and South Asia are categorized as one region. The analysis in most instances will concentrate on major commodities such as cocoa, coconut oil, coffee, cotton, jute, palm oil, rice, natural rubber, tea and timber. This does not, however, preclude the application of many of the generalizations given here to the minor commodities whose export earnngs from these export earnings are generally less than those of the other commodities such as sugar, tapioca, pepper, coconut, maize, fruits and vegetables, etc. Further, this study will not cover fuels, minerals and metals, animal products and fishery products as their trading patterns may differ from agricultural commodities based on trees and plants. Moreover, steps which individual countries could initiate independently for the development of their primary commodity trade have been left out as they comprise a separate area of study.

Owing to a strong cultural and historical bond, India and Southeast Asia have progressed rapidly. Though there are political and ideological differences between these two entities, it may not hamper the strong bond as there are many common shared values among these nations. The history of these nations identifies that the cooperation between them in terms of trade and commerce is not upheld per the given potential of these nations. In the past, the Indian economy was linked with Southeast Asian countries under the “Look East” policy, which has been re-energized again under the present government. Now, the “Look East” policy is practically more vibrant than ever before with the motto “Act East.” This policy facilitates these countries in emphasizing the importance of better regional connectivity for tourism as well as robust trade and commerce. It leads to a phenomenal growth in terms of imports and exports for these countries. Evaluating Trade and Economic Relations Between India and Southeast Asia sheds light on the trade and economic linkages between India and Southeast Asia and their impact on the nations in the past, present, and for the future. The USA and China, the world’s largest economic powers, have been engaging in trade war since January 2018. The impact of this trade war is felt not only by US and China but also by other economies who have economic ties with them. This book provides insights into damages caused by this trade war. The first section of the book looks at the impact of the trade war on the global economy. It goes deeper to examine the trade war impact on the South Asian region. Volume I of the series on ASEAN-China Relations focused on trends and patterns in bilateral economic relations between ASEAN countries on the one hand, and China on the other. Volume II focused on macroeconomic and institutional developments in China and in selected sectors in ASEAN and China, and their implications for bilateral economic relations. This third volume focuses on developments in the global arena and in the Pacific and their impact on bilateral economic relations between ASEAN and China. The papers cover the following - economic developments in the Pacific region, the economic role of Japan and the United States, industrial restructuring in the Asian Newly Industrializing Economies, the special role of Hong Kong, prospects for Pacific economic cooperation, and China's membership in GATT.

The past decade has witnessed rapid development in ASEAN-China relations. Both sides now have more in common than before, though differences still exist. ASEAN and China have established a promising strategic partnership ensuring peace, stability, co-operation as well as prosperity for the region. New challenges will, however, continue to emerge to test the resolve of the partnership. This book examines some of the areas of convergence and divergence and the possible trajectories of the development of ASEAN-China relations.

Asia, especially East Asia, has seen unprecedented economic transformation in recent decades, and the momentum is likely to continue despite the occasional blips and turbulences. Indeed, the economic focus has shifted from the Atlantic to the Pacific. A booming Asia has both opportunities and challenges for the Arab Gulf states which already depend on Asia for approximately 52 percent of their total trade. Much of Asia's increased demand for energy will be met by the countries of the Arab Gulf. A major challenge in this regard, is also to safeguard the security and safety of navigation in the vital sea-lanes through which increasing number of tankers will travel. However, energy need not be the only basis of cooperation. Generally, the East Asian economies have become competitive through effective use of information technology and skill development. Institutional link-up between the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) and the Gulf Co-operation Council (GCC) offers a good basis for a quick start at the political level, thus paving the way for more broad-based cooperation involving economic, security and cultural dimensions. Political will and determination are required to give impetus to this effort.
