The economies of the six countries of ASEAN are small in comparison to that of the United States; together the ASEAN GDP is about 5 per cent of the US GDP. However, their rapid growth in the 1970s and early 1980s, and outward orientation make them more important than their sall size would indicate. This book covers topics such as trade in goods and services, intellectual property rights, investment, US ansd ASEAN economic outlook and recommendations for framework agreement.

The volume is divided into four parts. Part I considers the broad trends in the recent economic performances of the United States and the problem of increasing protectionism. Part II analyses the structural adjustments in both the United States and the developing countries in ASEAN. Part III provides analyses of U.S.ASEAN trade in services from both the U.S. and ASEAN perspectives.

In October 2007, a group of distinguished thinkers from ASEAN and the United States gathered in Singapore for the ASEAN-U.S. Symposium. The objectives of the Symposium were to take stock of ASEAN's many achievements over the last three decades and to brainstorm new ideas that would elevate the ASEAN-U.S. relationship to a new peak. The Symposium addressed three main themes, namely, ASEAN at forty: achievements and new vision; understanding the strategic landscape and regional architecture - the role of the United States in ASEAN; and, opportunities for cooperation between ASEAN and the United States and the pursuit of peace, stability, and prosperity.

This book offers a cogent overview of the historical context and enduring patterns of US relations with Asia. Noted scholar Robert G. Sutter provides a balanced analysis of post–Cold War dynamics in Asia, which involve interrelated questions of security, economics, national identity, and regional institution building. He demonstrates how these critical concerns manifest a complex mix of realist, liberal, and constructivist tendencies that define the regional order. Sutter weighs how the recent US emphasis on “re-engagement” with the broader Asia-Pacific fits within the context of regional dynamics. He assesses how the United States has responded to Asia’s growing strength and importance while at the same time trying to maintain its leading position as an Asian power despite China’s rising influence.

The Enterprise for ASEAN Initiative (EAI), as envisaged in 2002 by the Bush administration, is set to be a landmark in U.S.-ASEAN trade relations. This study provides a detailed background and a map to the unfolding negotiations. It includes: a detailed review of the U.S.-ASEAN economic relationship, beginning with coverage of the U.S.-ASEAN trade in goods globally and ending with an in-depth analysis of the changing structure of bilateral trade in services; reviews of theories of FTAs and empirical testing of the economics of the EAI itself. Using the USSFTA as a reference point, this study identifies and highlights the special bilateral issues that will likely be involved in the ongoing EAI FTA negotiations. The EAI is considered in the context of a changing global, Asia-Pacific and sub-regional environment. Finally, the book makes a case for the EAI, focusing on policy motivations - that is, as a defensive strategy for ASEAN and a proactive commercial policy approach for the United States - as well as a strategic imperative for both. The Economics of the Enterprise for ASEAN Initiative is intended to inform governmental, and nongovernmental policy-makers, trade analysts, economists, and researchers who need to have a comprehensive guide to this major trade initiative.
