Theological Hermeneutics In The Classical Pentecostal Tradition

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

In Theological Hermeneutics in the Classical Pentecostal Tradition: A Typological Account, L. William Oliverio Jr. accounts for the development of Classical Pentecostal theology, as theological hermeneutics, through four types: the original Classical Pentecostal hermeneutic, the Evangelical-Pentecostal hermeneutic, the contextual-Pentecostal hermeneutic, and the ecumenical-Pentecostal hermeneutic. Oliverio gives special attention to key figures in shaping Pentecostal theology and the underlying philosophical assumptions which informed their theological interpretations of reality. The text concludes with a philosophical basis for future Pentecostal theological hermeneutics within the contours of a hermeneutical realism that affirms both the hermeneutical nature of all theology and the implicit affirmation of realism within theological accounts.

The Hermeneutical Spirit

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

In the contemporary biblical studies climate, proposals regarding the theological interpretation of Scripture are contested, particularly but not only because they privilege, encourage, and foster ecclesial or other forms of normative commitments as part and parcel of the hermeneutical horizon through which scriptural texts are read and understood. Within this context, confessional approaches have been emerging, including some from within the nascent pentecostal theological tradition. This volume builds on the author's previous work in theological method to suggest a pentecostal perspective on theological interpretation that is rooted in the conviction that all Christian reading of sacred Scripture is post-Pentecost, meaning after the Day of Pentecost outpouring of the Spirit on all flesh in anticipation of the coming reign of God. In that respect, such a pentecostal interpretative perspective is not parochially for those within the modern day movement bearing that name but is arguably apostolic in following after the scriptural imagination of the earliest disciples of Jesus the messiah and therefore has ecumenical and missional purchase across space and time. The Hermeneutical Spirit thus provides close readings of various texts across the scriptural canon as a model for Christian theological interpretation of Scripture suitable for the twenty-first-century global context.

African Pentecostal Theology

BOOK EXCERPT:

African Pentecostal Theology: Modality, Disciplinarity, and Decoloniality explores research methodology, theological disciplines, and contextualization as important aspects in the process of studying Pentecostal theology in an African context. Mookgo Solomon Kgatle outlines different data collection and data analysis methods, including the skills of interpreting and presenting research findings in a responsible manner. This book illustrates that Pentecostal theology, given its pneumatological approach, goes beyond conventional theological disciplines in transdisciplinary research. The development of knowledge in African Pentecostal Theology should recognize African Indigenous Knowledge Systems (AIKS), African oral and traditional cultures, and African indigenous languages to be relevant to Africans. Pentecostal theologians from different theological disciplines in Africa and globally will find this book a worthwhile read.

David Yonggi Cho

BOOK EXCERPT:

"Millions of people around the world know about Yonggi Cho and his great Yoido Church in Seoul, Korea. Very few, however, know about the power of his theology. This book by many distinguished researchers, mostly Asians, tells us more than ever before just who David Yonggi Cho is and the reasons for the powerful influence in Korea, Asia, and the entire Christian world."Vinson Synan, Ph.D., Regent University, Virginia Beach, VA"This unique book brings together studies surrounding the exceptionally gifted pastor of the world's largest church along with a cadre of emerging Asian scholars - both emerging from the Pentecostal movement. Clearly the Asian, and especially the Korean, churches mark the shift of the ecclesiastical center of gravity away from the West toward the East and the South. This pastor, and these scholars, will be irrestible voices in the Pentecostalism of the new century."Russell P. Spittler, Ph.D., Fuller Theological Seminary, Pasadena, CA"Finally, there is available a text on Asian Pentecostalism written by Asian Pentecostals (along with some informed Western colleagues). Asian Pentecostalism represents the future of the worldwide Spirit-movement. Pastor Yonggi Cho is a fruitful and challenging case-study, not only for the sheer size of his church but also because of his courage and creativity in anchoring Pentecostalism in the Korean context."Veli-Matti Karkkainen, Dr. Theol. habil., Fuller Theological Seminary, Pasadena, CA University of Helsinki, Finland
