eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

The world of digitalisation is changing the way how people and business companies communicate with each other. Electronic negotiations represent one of the most important forms of business communication and can influence the successes and failures of companies in a significant way, whether in interorganisational or intraorganisational processes. Analysing negotiation interactions to determine pattern-based peculiarities in the communication offers new value-adding information concerning the management of optimised communication processes, even though the machine-based processing of communication data bears a series of challenges. The present book develops a new approach to analyse the automated pattern recognition potential of Machine Learning methods in unstructured negotiation communication. It presents holistic research frameworks for the effective detection of structural patterns and reveals the pattern labelling potential in high-dimensional communication data by analytically implementing a series of Machine Learning methods.

Social Media Influencers In Strategic Communication

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This book seeks to draw a comprehensive picture of influencer collaborations from a strategic communication perspective. The contributors tackle strategic influencer communication from multidisciplinary perspectives, from varying actor foci, and from different methodological frameworks and methods. Influencers cross traditional boundaries in many ways and oscillate between intimacy and publicity, authenticity and commercialization, ingratiation and critical distance. From a strategic communication perspective, this variability makes influencers hard to capture: organizations can cooperate with influencers to achieve both marketing and PR objectives. Influencers can act as cooperation partners, integrating commercial content into organic narratives, or as independent critics. Influencers also combine different roles that have traditionally been occupied by separate actors such as intermediary, content distributor, creative content producer, community manager, testimonial, strategic counsellor, and event host. The combination of these roles in just one actor opens new opportunities for strategic communication and can produce appreciated synergy effects. It is therefore hardly surprising that influencer collaborations have become a firmly established instrument in the toolbox of strategic communicators. The chapters in this book were originally published in the International Journal of Advertising and the International Journal of Strategic Communication.

The Future Of Work And Technology

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This book examines how global technological advances shape the way we work and allocate work today, and how we might do so in the future, exploring advances in robotics, artificial intelligence, green technology and implications for workforce skills and future welfare. It uses Australia as a case study, contrasting the country’s experience to those elsewhere. The book is a cross-disciplinary collaboration that brings together the expertise of engineers, data scientists, economists and sociologists. The reader is offered an overview of the current uses of advanced digital technologies and what it means for today’s workforce, society and economy. The book also looks to the future. Current uses of advanced technologies lag its already existing capability. The contributions note potential future applications of technology and the economic, social and workplace implications of technological change. This book should be of interest to anyone studying and wishing to better understand what work might look like in the future and how we might prepare for likely changes.

Video Surveillance

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Video surveillance systems, often referred to as closed-circuit television (CCTV), have become a defining feature of modern life. Their widespread use by many different agencies for a range of purposes is no longer surprising, and is generally accepted in most European countries. Although broad academic interest accompanied the proliferation of CCTV in the mid to late 1990s, issues of governance and public policy are rarely explicitly addressed by social scientists and many of the concerns raised during the debate which followed the video surveillance revolution remain unanswered, and are as pertinent today as they were then. This book brings into focus the ways in which the implementation of cameras and systems, and their operation and technical features, are the product of decisions and policies made in a variety of contexts and by a variety of authorities and interested parties. It examines the cultural context in which cameras are deployed and explores how this context can shape their diffusion and use. The book places particular emphasis on studies of video surveillance in different national, institutional, cultural and linguistic settings. The book is divided into two parts. The chapters in part one are theoretically informed contributions from a variety of academic disciplines. Part two consists of five case studies, which are less theoretical and more descriptive, but which offer important insights for the governance of video surveillance cameras. Providing a fascinating study of the wider implications of video surveillance and its pervasive use, this book will be of interest to all those interested in how this phenomenon affects all of us in society today.
