Bangkok Wakes To Rain

BOOK EXCERPT:

"Recreates the experience of living in Thailand's aqueous climate so viscerally that you can feel the water rising around your ankles." —Ron Charles, Washington Post "Important, ambitious, and accomplished." —Mohsin Hamid, New York Times bestselling author of Exit West A missionary doctor pines for his native New England even as he succumbs to the vibrant chaos of nineteenth-century Siam. A post-World War II society woman marries, mothers, and holds court, little suspecting her solitary fate. A jazz pianist in the age of rock, haunted by his own ghosts, is summoned to appease the house's resident spirits. In the present, a young woman tries to outpace the long shadow of her political past. And in a New Krungthep yet to come, savvy teenagers row tourists past landmarks of the drowned old city they themselves do not remember. Time collapses as these lives collide and converge, linked by the forces voraciously making and remaking the amphibious, ever-morphing capital itself. Bangkok Wakes to Rain is an elegy for what time erases and a love song to all that persists, yearning, into the unknowable future.

Moments Of Capital

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Undertaken at the interface of critical theory and world literature, Moments of Capital sets out to grasp the unity and heterogeneity of global capital in the postcolonial present. Eli Jelly-Schapiro argues that global capital is composed of three synchronous moments: primitive accumulation, expanded reproduction, and the "synthetic dispossession" facilitated by financialization and privatization. These moments correspond to distinct economic and political forms, and distinct strands of theory and fiction. Moments of Capital integrates various intellectual traditions—from multiple trajectories of Marxist thought, to Weberian inquiries into the "spirit" of capitalism, to anticolonial accounts of racial depredation—to reveal the concurrent interrelation of the three moments of capital. The book's literary readings, meanwhile, make vivid the uneven texture and experience of capitalist modernity at large. Analyzing formally and thematically diverse novels—works by Fiston Mwanza Mujila, Marlon James, Jennifer Egan, Eugene Lim, Rafael Chirbes, Neel Mukherjee, Rachel Kushner, and others—Jelly-Schapiro evinces the different patterns of feeling and consciousness that register, and hypothesize a way beyond, the contradictions of capital. This book develops a new conceptual key for the mapping of contemporary theory, world literature, and global capital itself.

Anthony MinghellaFull Length, Comedic Drama Characters: 7 male, 5 female Interior and exterior scenes or one unit set. Written by the late writer/director of many cinematic hits including The English Patient, this play explores British imperialism and the exploitation of indiginous culture focussing on five English tourists in Bangkok. "The best new English play since Benefactors. It asks all the right questions while managing also to be a bittersweet comedy about impossible sexual differences."-Punch "Under a deceptively comic surface, Anthony Minghella's play offers a dark and troubled view of both Eastern and Western values."-London Guardian "An extremely funny play but also a scathing indictment of our so called civilized society."- Time Out "Strong, brave, uncomfortable, provocative."-London City Limits

Tropical Rain Forest Ecosystems

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

One of the most important of the world's ecosystems, the tropical rain forest is rapidly being converted to other uses, yet it is a poorly known and under-utilized natural resource. This volume is based on a modern ecological examination of tropical forests and treats both basic and applied aspects. Structural features are dealt with first, including the taxonomic and physical-chemical organisation of forests. Next is a section on the function of forests which considers production, nutrient cycling, decomposition processes, succession, trophic dynamics and reproductive biology. The behavioral and physiological phenomena underlying forest structure and function are then considered and, finally, some of the most important applied aspects are examined, including the production of timber, rates of exploitation and loss of forests, conservation, traditional human use of forests and disease in tropical forests.
