Born in Sumter County, South Carolina, Maria Baker married John Morgandollar Taylor in 1834. The mother of thirteen children, Taylor taught her children and grandchildren at home, devoted large amounts of time to church work, and read voraciously. James E. Tull's study and critique of the history and teachings of Landmarkism has established itself as a classic treatment of this important movement.
