1.0 Introduction 1.1 Philosophy 1.2 Ethics 1.3 Ethical aspects of nursing 1.4 Code of ethics 1.5 Personal aspects of illness 1.6 Social aspects of illness 1.7 Economic aspects of illness 1.8 Summary 1.0 Introduction As a nurse you are going to be caring for other people, many of whom may be very ill and distressed. Some may have lost their ability to reason, whilst others may never have had this facility. This has a number of effects. For example, it may give rise to personal fears, anxieties and bewilderment, or to aggression and destructive ness. It causes social upsets within the family, at work and in society. Coupled with this are the economic effects, first to the individual and secondly to the community. From the nurse's point of view, all these aspects are important but there are two aspects which are of particular importance. In order to do your job well you will need a lot of knowledge and this will mean much study. You will, after a time, look upon increasing your knowledge as a pleasure to be enjoyed and not as a chore to be endured. This love of knowledge, or more precisely, love of wisdom is called Philosophy. During your professional career you will be forming relationships with other people. Your relationships are going to be different, in one important respect, from ordinary relationships, because of the mental state of those with whom you will relate.

The Medical Basis Of Psychiatry

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Four years have passed since the last edition (3rd) of this book was published. In the intervening years, several reviews of this book have provided highly encouraging remarks about the value of this book in transmitting information on classification and treatment of psychiatric disorders to the audience. We are proposing to revise all chapters with an eye on accuracy and ease of use, and this is an especially timely endeavor with the upcoming publication of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual V. All the appropriate new information on biology, etiology, diagnosis and treatment of psychiatric disorders will be added to the current proposed edition. It is our goal to recruit the same authors (if possible) who contributed to the previous edition. While all chapters will be updated (see TOC), those marked by asterisks will be the most likely to undergo more revision. Psychiatry has emerged as a burgeoning scientific field with major advances in etiology and treatment of several disorders. Just as there was excitement in the anatomic advances that took place a hundred years ago when Emil Kraepelin and his collaborators took on the enormous task of classification of psychiatric disorders based on rational scientific thinking, new advances in genetics, biochemistry, neuroanatomy and pharmacotherapy of mental disorders have brought us even closer to a better understanding of complex disorders like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression and even autism. The major goal of the previous edition of this classic book was to update the busy clinician, psychiatric resident and medical student with the most up-to-date information on etiology, diagnosis and treatment of psychiatric disorders. This goal remains the focus of the fourth edition of this book. In this updated and expanded edition, the reader will be provided with the most contemporary information and literature supported by a close survey of the field. This new edition of this classic title, with its focus on biologic and medical aspects of psychiatry, will continue to be of significant help to all interested in the scientific practice of psychiatry.

Basic Notes In Psychiatry

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

The novice in psychiatry requires a skeletal framework which he can clothe progressively with more detail and sophisticated understanding. Without structure the naive in the subject must fail to orientate through to a clearer conceptualization of key and relevant issues in psychiatry today. To allow for the acquisition of basic concepts, review and revision, any provisional framework should of necessity be concise and unpretentious. In this book Dr. Michael Levi has succeeded in creating a good starting point for the retention of new knowledge, which can then be built on through diverse reading and clinical experience. A. Margo, FRCPsych Consultant Psychiatrist IV Introduction The purpose of writing this book is to provide a concise summary of general adult psychiatry in the form of notes. I have based these notes on what is generally regarded to be the most easily readable and evenly 1 written textbook for the MRCPsych examination. The book is intended to have wide readership - particularly among junior hospital psychiatrists, general practitioners and medical students. In addition, the book will also be useful to psychiatric nurses, psychiatric social workers and clinical psychologists. Reference 1. Gelder, M., Gath, D. and Mayou, R (1988). Oxford Textbook of Psychiatry (Oxford: Oxford Medical Publications) v Acknowledgements I wish to thank Dr A. Margo for writing the Foreword to this book.
