The year 2022 has been declared by the United Nations as the “International Year of Basic Sciences for Sustainable Development”. Sustainable development is focused on the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals. These require the use of basic sciences. This edited book (volume 1) is a collection of twelve invited and peer-reviewed contributions from chemistry, materials science, energy applications, and artificial intelligence.

First published in 1998. In the Third World, development-orientated research in the basic sciences have received a negligible share of available resources from domestic and foreign sources. This book addresses the growing concerns regarding the policies guiding support to development research in recipient countries.

The human right to science, outlined in the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights and repeated in the 1966 International Covenant on Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights, recognizes everyone’s right to “share in scientific advancement and its benefits” and to “enjoy the benefits of scientific progress and its applications.” This right also requires state parties to develop and disseminate science, to respect the freedom of scientific research, and to recognize the benefits of international contacts and co-operation in the scientific field. The right to science has never been more important. Even before the COVID-19 health crisis, it was evident that people around the world increasingly rely on science and technology in almost every sphere of their lives from the development of medicines and the treatment of diseases, to transport, agriculture, and the facilitation of global communication. At the same time, however, the value of science has been under attack, with some raising alarm at the emergence of “post-truth” societies. “Dual use” and unintended, because often unforeseen, consequences of emerging technologies are also perceived to be a serious risk. The important role played by science and technology and the potential for dual use makes it imperative to evaluate scientific research and its products not only on their scientific but also on their human rights merits. In Science as a Cultural Human Right, Helle Porsdam argues robustly for the role of the right to science now and in the future. The book analyzes the legal stature of this right, the potential consequences of not establishing it as fundamental, and its connection to global cultural rights. It offers the basis for defending the free and responsible practice of science and ensuring that its benefits are spread globally.

The book looks at the life of one of India's foremost scientists, Dr R. Chidambaram, who served as principal scientific advisor (PSA) to the Government of India and as chairman of the Scientific Advisory Committee to the Cabinet (SACC) from November 2001 to March 2018. As one of India's most distinguished experimental physicists, Dr Chidambaram has made outstanding contributions to many aspects of basic science and nuclear technology. A Padma Vibhushan awardee, he played a leading and integral role in the design and execution of the peaceful Nuclear Explosion experiment at Pokhran in 1974 and led the team of the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), which designed the nuclear devices and carried out in cooperation with the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) the Pokhran tests in May 1998. During his stewardship of the DAE, the nuclear power programme got a big boost and the capacity of the nuclear power plants increased sharply. Ruminating about his interactions with the scientific community and the political leadership, Dr Chidambaram describes key events in India's journey to selfreliance in nuclear energy. India Rising is not only a memoir of one of India's eminent scientists, but also a fascinating account of India's ascendance in the world of science and technology.

The book presents a novel, interdisciplinary approach to describe the role of advanced research and engineering in contemporary poultry science and poultry production. After the United Nations adopted the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to "end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure prosperity for all," researchers and policy makers highlighted the importance of targeted investment in science, technology, and innovation (STI) to make tangible progress. Science, Technology, and Innovation for Sustainable Development Goals showcases the roles that STI solutions can play in meeting on-the-ground socio-economic and environmental challenges among domestic and international organizations concerned with the SDGs in three overlapping areas: agriculture, health, and environment/energy. New knowledge, created in international cooperation, is essential for global sustainability. Set against this background, this study focuses on German science policy for research cooperation with developing countries and emerging economies in sustainability research. Based on interviews with policy makers and researchers, the book scrutinizes the actors, processes and contents of science policy in Germany. The author argues that science policy mainly aims at German economic benefits and technology development. This, however, negatively influences global sustainability. To counter existing path dependencies, the author provides recommendations for sustainability-oriented scientific practice and science policy.

Welcome Message from the Chairman of ICBS 2018 On behalf of the organizing committee, it is a great pleasure to welcome all the participants and keynote speakers to the 4th International Conference Basic Science (ICBS) 2018 at the Pattimura University Ambon, Indonesia with theme "The Development of Science and Technology in Improving Natural and Cultural Resources". This theme aims to discuss the role of science and technology in increasing the use of natural resources and cultural development in the Maluku islands. This international forum also provides a platform where national and international academia or researchers, policy makers, and other stakeholders to translate technology, exchange ideas, and help stimulate multidisciplinary international collaborations in a convergent-manner for shaping a worldwide sustainable development. It is worth noting that, the 4thICBS event genuinely highlights the important of convergence of basic science research to address world’s sustainability challenges. The conference was attended by invited speakers from Hochschule Nordhausen University Germany; Kumamoto University, Japan; Indonesian Parrot Project; Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember, Indonesia. There are250 participants, with poster participants 19 articles, oral presentations 51 articles and 185 non-presenter participants.This proceedings only contain 15 articles because the others has been selected to publish in international journal.
