BOOK EXCERPT:
Many times, human behavior ignores a situation until it becomes a problem. Predators often fall into this mindset. A mortgage could be an example of the efforts of Predator Awareness. Your mortgage is an agreement between you and your lender. It requires a commitment of a payment. Do you make the monthly payment, or wait until the bank begins foreclosure? The monthly payment is a commitment that prevents the need for the bank's foreclosure process. Simply taking care of business before it becomes a problem. If you have livestock within the boundaries of North America, you also have predators present. By acknowledging that, you are aware of the possibility of predatory pressures. It's better to acknowledge the threat and make an effort, rather than waiting until it becomes a problem. Much like taking care of the monthly payment, rather than waiting till the foreclosure process begins. Predator Awareness is about installing routinely practiced pro-active methods, rather than waiting to perform an occasional reactionary response.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Carnivores provide innumerable ecological benefits and play a unique role in preserving and maintaining ecosystem services and function, but at the same time they can create serious problems for human populations. A key question for conservation biologists and wildlife managers is how to manage the world's carnivore populations to conserve this important natural resource while mitigating harmful impacts on humans. In People and Predators, leading scientists and researchers offer case studies of human-carnivore conflicts in a variety of landscapes, including rural, urban, and political. The book covers a diverse range of taxa, geographic regions, and conflict scenarios, with each chapter dealing with a specific facet of human-carnivore interactions and offering practical, concrete approaches to resolving the conflict under consideration. Chapters provide background on particular problems and describe how challenges have been met or what research or tools are still needed to resolve the conflicts. People and Predators will helps readers to better understand issues of carnivore conservation in the 21st century, and provides practical tools for resolving many of the problems that stand between us and a future in which carnivores fulfill their historic ecological roles.

BOOK EXCERPT:
A great collection of bear attack true stories for hikers, hunters, and all who venture into the outdoors. Bears are one of nature’s apex predators, gentle and fuzzy to watch from a distance, fierce and unpredictable when aroused—and then it’s too late for humans to escape a dangerous, fearsome, or fatal encounter. In this collection, we gather the most thrilling and frightening bear-attack stories of the past few decades. Grizzlies, brown bears, black bears—and their unfortunate encounters with humans. This is what happens—When Bears Attack. Joseph B. Healy takes a closer look at some of the notable bear attacks of recent history in order to determine their causes, evaluate what happened, and appreciate the raw power—and danger—of mother nature. He tells tales of hikers enjoying weekend camping trips as well as workers going about their daily routines. Follow along as the victims’ lives are disrupted by bears, and see how survivors were forced to think and act in the moment to stay alive. As modern life continues to encroach on the wilderness, encounters between bears and humans will only increase. Learn about the outcome of these feral clashes in When Bears Attack.
