May 17, 2004 will mark the 50th anniversary of the landmark Brown v. Board of Education desegregation decision. This case is considered to be the most important legal case affecting African Americans in the twentieth century and one of the most important Supreme Court decisions in U. S. Constitution history. Brown v. Board of Education combines separate cases from Kansas (Brown et. Al v. Board of Education of Topeka), South Carolina (Briggs v. Elliott), Delaware (Belton v. Gebhart), Virginia (Davis v. County School Board of Prince Edward Country, Virginia), and the District of Columbia (Boiling v. Sharpe). The Brown companion cases presented segregation at its worst. Although supposedly guaranteeing African Americans "separate but equal" education, schools for African Americans were never equal as many were in run-down buildings with overcrowded classrooms. Many schools had no indoor plumbing or heating and there was little money for books and supplies. Bus service was rarely supplied for African American children who often had to walk past better-equipped white schools to attend segregated schools. The NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People) decided to challenge segregation in schools and took the Brown cases to the Supreme Court. After combining the five cases in one large case, the Supreme Court ruled that segregated schools were illegal. This book will serve as a helpful curriculum guide to educators interested in teaching the details of one of the most important legal cases in African American history.

This collection of essays aims to widen the current critique on borders by examining their entanglements with constructions of identity and disciplinary categories. In particular, it calls into question established models of gender, notions of narrative genres and typological genera of borders in today’s literary, artistic, philosophical, and socio-political discourse. The chapters interrogate boundaries and boundary-crossing not only in terms of geographical frontiers and the physical acts of trespassing, but also as discursive constructs that police crossing subjects as gendered subjects, on the one hand, and identify artistic genres and academic disciplines as fixed, sealed-in ways of understanding the world, on the other. Taking inspiration from the multiple meanings of the Italian word genere (which stands for “gender”, “genre”, and “typology”/“genus” simultaneously), the volume reflects on the gendered, narrative, and typological nature of borders and border imagery, and on the significance and potentialities of crossover phenomena taking place in borderlands, in the fields of arts, literature, anthropology, sociology and philosophy.

Beyond Boundaries-Reflections of Indian and U.S. Scholars documents experiential learning of exchange scholars from India and the U.S.A. These essays from Fulbright Scholars, Post-Doc Researchers, Humphrey Fellows, and participants of International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP), and East-West Center, provide a diverse spectrum of their cultural and academic experiences. After World War II, museum and gallery exhibitions, industrial and trade fairs, biennials, triennials, festivals and world's fairs increasingly came to be used as locations for the exercise of "soft power," for displays of cultural diplomacy between nations and as spaces for addressing areas of social and political contestation. Backpacking Beyond Boundaries is the story of a young man who puts his career on hold in search of adventure and the discovery of his inner being. He leaves South Africa in 1990 while Nelson Mandela is still in prison and South Africa ruled by a white minority government. His travels take him through 35 countries and cultures as far afield as South East Asia where he spends one year; exotic islands of Thailand, hitchhiking through Malaysia, charming beauty of Sri Lanka, overland through India into Nepal and finally back to Thailand. He also buses through Morocco and into the Sahara Desert. In Turkey he joins a group of 11 fellow backpackers and travels across the country. Behind the Iron Curtain he visits East Germany and the Berlin Wall, Czechoslovakia, Poland and Hungary seeing communism at work. In 1996 he returns to a free South Africa, one now with equal rights and called the Rainbow Nation, before choosing a new life in Canada. In 2003 he travels to Namibia and reconnects with his army past. And in 2005 he makes a special journey to Mozambique with two army friends to see the prison where one of them was held captive.
