BOOK EXCERPT:
Scholars and activists often narrate the history of gender and feminism as a progression of "waves," said to mark high points of innovation in theory and moments of political breakthrough. Arguing for the notion of multiple futurities over that of progressive waves, Beyond Gender combines theoretical work with practical applications to provide an advanced introduction to contemporary feminist and sexuality research and advocacy. This comprehensive monograph documents the diversification of gender-related disciplines and struggles, arguing for a multidisciplinary approach to issues formerly subsumed under the unified field of gender studies. Split into two parts, the volume demonstrates how the notion of gender has been criticized by various theories pertaining to masculinity, feminism, and sexuality, and also illustrates how the binary and hierarchical ordering system of gender has been troubled or overcome in practice: in queer performance, legal critique, the classroom, and textual analysis. Taking a fresh approach to contemporary debates in feminist and sexuality studies, Beyond Gender will appeal to undergraduate students interested in fields such as Feminism and Sexuality Studies, Gender Studies, Feminist Theory, and Masculinity Studies.

BOOK EXCERPT:
A bold and provocative work from the late preeminent feminist scholar, which challenges men and women alike to free themselves from attachment to gender. At the heart of Buddhism is the notion of egolessness—“forgetting the self”—as the path to awakening. In fact, attachment to views of any kind only leads to more suffering for ourselves and others. And what has a greater hold on people’s imaginations or limits them more, asks Rita Gross, than ideas about biological sex and what she calls “the prison of gender roles”? Yet if clinging to gender identity does, indeed, create obstacles for us, why does the prison of gender roles remain so inescapable? Gross uses the lenses of Buddhist philosophy to deconstruct the powerful concept of gender and its impact on our lives. In revealing the inadequacies involved in clinging to gender identity, she illuminates the suffering that results from clinging to any kind of identity at all.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Grieving Beyond Gender: Understanding the Ways Men and Women Mourn is a revision of Men Don’t Cry, Women Do: Transcending Gender Stereotypes of Grief. In this work, Doka and Martin elaborate on their conceptual model of "styles or patterns of grieving" – a model that has generated both research and acceptance since the publication of the first edition in 1999. In that book, as well as in this revision, Doka and Martin explore the different ways that individuals grieve, noting that gender is only one factor that affects an individual’s style or pattern of grief. The book differentiates intuitive grievers, where the pattern is more affective, from instrumental grievers, who grieve in a more cognitive and behavioral way, while noting other patterns that might be more blended or dissonant. The model is firmly grounded in social science theory and research. A particular strength of the work is the emphasis placed on the clinical implications of the model on the ways that different types of grievers might best be supported through individual counseling or group support.

BOOK EXCERPT:
The debate about God-language has two opposing extremes. One side maintains that biblical language and masculine pronouns must be retained. The other argues that female imagery for God is preferable. Now Gail Ramshaw presents a third position, urging the inclusion of many images for God, the correction of others, and the total avoidance of any pronouns.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Judith Butler beyond gender is philosophy in motion. There is nothing superfluous about this book. Nor is there any pretension of displaying erudition. What one will read here is political philosophy, which is philosophy itself, according to the author. She takes personal and collective mourning as an object of research and reflection. In this project, she joins Judith Butler, a philosopher who has been approaching mourning as a necessary and crucial issue for political criticism for quite some time now. We live in a time when mourning has a great meaning. The covid-19 pandemic has already caused the death of millions of people around the world, hundreds of thousands in Brazil. An immense collective loss. We are hopelessly constituted by our losses and absences. We are also constituted by our memories. Carla Rodrigues also makes us think about all these issues. She makes us reflect on inequality in death, on the lives that matter as well as those that are lost; on which lives are grievable. There is no denying this desolate scenario, even when some insist on it. We share this collective mourning. It is about claiming the right to experience it. "Finding ways to defend a more egalitarian society requires a public policy on mourning and memory," says Carla. Guacira Lopes Louro
