Jacob of Edessa (c.640-708) is considered the most learned Christian of the early days of Islam. In all fifteen contributions to this volume, written by prominent specialists, the interaction between Christianity, Judaism, and the new religion is an important issue. The articles discuss Jacob’s biography as well as his position in early Islamic Edessa, and give a full picture of the various aspects of Jacob of Edessa’s life and work as a scholar and clergyman. Attention is paid to his efforts in the fields of historiography, correspondence, canon law, text and interpretation of the Bible, language and translation, theology, philosophy, and science. Selected Studies In Old Testament Exegesis

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This book is a tribute to Professor de Boer, the well-known Old Testamentarian of Leiden University who held the chair from 1938 till 1978. Not only was he involved in organizational and editorial work (I.S.S.O.T., Peshitta Institute, Vetus Testamentum etc.), but he was also an inspired and inspiring teacher and a subtle exegete of the Hebrew texts in which he was interested. In this volume, originally intended as a message of congratulation for his 80th birthday (June 14, 1990) around twenty of his own lectures and articles are presented here which previously were less accessible, because, for instance, they were written in Dutch. All the collected studies are now published in English apart from two in German and two in French. They cover the whole of his scholarly life, from his inaugural address on "Kingship in Ancient Israel" (1938) to his contribution about Psalm lxxxi 6a, to the Festschrift for G.W. Ahlström (1984). The volume is concluded with a bibliography comprising all Professor de Boer's publications concerning the Old Testament and related scholarly subjects.

Formation And Reformulation

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This volume offers a critical examination of recent theories concerning the growth of biblical literature in the light of the oldest textual witnesses (the Qumran biblical scrolls and the Septuagint). On the basis of a fresh examination of a selection of passages in the book of Joshua, it is shown that these witnesses do not reflect a stage in the literary formation of the book prior to the standardised (Masoretic) text, but a reinterpretation and reformulation of its contents. The study presents a new literary-critical solution to the intricate problems of Joshua 8 and a detailed exegesis of the Greek version of Joshua 1 and 5. Of special interest for Qumran scholars is the new reconstruction of 4QJoshuaa.

Biblical Hebrew Biblical Texts

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This collection focuses on the Hebrew Bible, its ancient versions and textual history. These are the fields in which the late Dr Weitzman had made his name, and the volume commemorates his lifetime's work, so prematurely ended. But it also stands on its own as an authoritative statement of current research in these and closely related fields. Contributors include Edward Ullendorff, Andrew Macintosh, Robert Gordon, Hugh Williamson, Gillian Greenberg, Jan Joosten, Sebastian Brock, Michael Knibb, Philip Alexander, George Brooke and Alison Salvesen.
