In India forests cover about 75m ha or about 25 per cent of the entire land area. In order to fulfil the appropriate functions the foresty development in India must proceed at a rate much faster than witherto for the sake of the entire economy, for the protection and improvement of the environment and for a much greater production of wood and other non-wood products. Not only the quality of environment be preserved and improved, but also the economic demand for forests products met adequately, both the internal utilization and for export. A substantial increase in employment in forestry operation is feasible and should be aimed at. It is necessary to emphasise that a close integration of the protective and porductive functions of forest should be aimed at which is both feasible and possible. Forests are a major factor of environment conservation and control extremes of heat and cold, rendering the climate more equable. To achieve good conservation and management of our natural resources, we should know the status of our genetic and biological resources. Thus continuous workd and intensive research in the fields of genetic diversity, species diversity and ecosystem diversity and urgently needed. The IUCN Academy of Environmental Law Research Studies' third colloquium of 2005 brought together more than 130 experts from 27 nations on nearly every continent. This is due to the biological diversity in the forest ecosystems. 70% of the world’s poor populace who live in rural areas is directly dependent on biodiversity for their livelihood. A rough estimate of 60 million indigenous folks are somehow reliant on forests for their daily needs. The Supreme Court of India in Rural Litigation and Entitlement Kendra v. State of Uttar Pradesh elucidated the importance of ecosystem services as provided by the forests.

In the past decade, the growing realization that biodiversity and human wellbeing are inextricably linked has led to the adoption of numerous environmental policies. The concept of the Green Economy has gained particular attention as an economic system where growth is possible within environmental limits. The preservation of ecosystem services and the halt of biodiversity loss are identified as key pillars of the Green Economy. Despite the concept’s momentum there is still no clear understanding of how biodiversity fits within a Green Economy. In the current debate, biodiversity is rarely acknowledged in economic sectors other than agriculture, forestry, fisheries and tourism, and when it is acknowledged biodiversity and its conservation feature more as buzzwords than as concrete and tangible components of the Green Economy. This book aims to identify, understand and offer pragmatic recommendations of how biodiversity conservation can become an agent of green economic development. This book establishes ways to assess biodiversity’s contributions to the economy and to meaningfully integrate biodiversity concerns in green-economy policies.
