The book describes all the main habitat types, the structure and composition of bird communities, and reviews bird sites and their distribution throughout Britain. Rob Fuller's book would not have been possible but for the nationwide cooperative endeavour by amateur and professional ornithologists, naturalists and conservationists which led to the British Trust for Ornithology's Register of Ornithological Sites, sponsored by the Nature Conservancy Council. Hitherto, few books have dealt primarily with bird habitats but the subject is of urgent importance now that exploitation of the environment has left few corners of Britain untouched or unthreatened. Even so, the book is much more than timely, it also extends the reader's interest to an area of bird study that has, perhaps, been too little considered. The text is supported by more than 100 diagrams and maps, and over 50 photographs; in addition there are 53 superbly evocative drawings by Donald Watson. For the birdwatcher and all involved with conservation, this is stimulating reading and an essential reference.

This companion volume to The Atlas of Breeding Birds of Britain and Ireland is derived from surveys of birds present in Britain and Ireland during the three winters, 1981/82, 1982/83 and 1983/84. The surveys were organised by the British Trust for Ornithology and the Irish Wildbird Conservancy, as were the earlier breeding birds surveys. The Winter Atlas maps 200 species, 192 of which have full-page two-colour maps faced by a page of text. The texts (written by over 100 specialists) comment on the survey results, the species generally and the distribution and abundance as mapped. In addition there are introductory chapters on the maps, the weather in the three winters, bird patterns and movements; and appendices describing the planning, organisation, field methods, and processing of the survey data from record cards to computer output and maps. A team of 23 artists, led by Robert Gillmor, has provided the line drawings which head the species accounts.

This authoritative work of reference gives a detailed assessment of the status and distribution of every species on the British and Irish lists, for the first time since 1971. The Status of Birds in Britain and Ireland was written to update the British Ornithologists' Union's last full Checklist published under the same title as far back as 1971. Since then there have been remarkable changes in both distribution and abundance of the region's birds. Some species have become extinct as breeding birds, whereas others have colonised and even become quite common; many of our most familiar birds have suffered critical declines with changes in land use and climate. Dozens of new species have occurred as vagrants, and many previous vagrants now occur much more frequently. Furthermore, there has been a major revolution in bird taxonomy. The book has been written by two former Chairmen of the British Ornithologists' Union Records Committee, and long-serving members of the BOU Taxonomic Sub-Committee. It was compiled with the close cooperation of former colleagues in the BOU Records Committee and TSC, as well as key figures in the Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland and the Isle of Man, to ensure it reflects the 'official' position in all the countries covered. The Status only includes records accepted by the committees responsible for each of the countries, follows the new taxonomy of the BOU, and uses English names approved by the International Ornithological Congress's working group on English names, as also adopted by the BOU. As such, the book is the only key text reflecting the 'official' status of birds throughout Britain and Ireland, as followed by bodies such as the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, the British Trust for Ornithology, the Joint Nature Conservation Council, BirdWatch Ireland, the BOU itself, and many others.

The Atlas plots the results of the survey organised by the BTO and the IWC during the years 1968-72. Over 250 maps show the distribution of 218 species. This companion volume to The Atlas of Wintering Birds in Britain and Ireland is derived from yearly surveys of breeding birds in Britain and Ireland during 1968-72, organised by the British Trust for Ornithology and the Irish Wildbird Conservancy. Each of the 3,862 10-km squares of Britain and Ireland was visited during the five years and the resulting records (over 285,000) are summarised in the maps. The full-page maps plot the known distribution of all but 11 of the 229 breeding species located during the survey period. Each map has an accompanying text which describes the species' habitat, the problems involved in proving breeding, the historical background to the species' range and any changes in its numbers. Periodic comprehensive overviews of the status of the diverse organisms that make up wildlife are essential to determining trends, threats and future prospects. Just over 25 years ago, leading authorities on different kinds of wildlife came together to prepare an assessment of their status of a wide range of organisms in Great Britain and Ireland in The Changing Flora and Fauna of Britain, also edited by Professor David L. Hawksworth CBE. Now, in The Changing Wildlife of Great Britain and Ireland, he has gathered together some of the original and also new contributors to review changes since that time and look to the future. Contributions range from viruses, diatoms, fungi, lichens, mites and nematodes; through butterflies, dragonflies, flies and slugs; to flowering plants, ferns, mammals, birds and fish. The state of knowledge in different groups is assessed, and the effectiveness of statutory and other measures taken to safeguard wildlife considered. The picture is far from bleak, ameliorating sulphur dioxide levels have benefited sensitive lichens and mosses in a dramatic way, water quality improvement has been beneficial, there have been few certain extinctions and rediscoveries of species thought to have been lost. Biodiversity Action Plans have also benefited targeted species, but habitat restoration and management for some is not always good for others. But there are worrying trends in declining populations, with an increasing number being regarded as threatened or endangered, especially in agricultural areas, and where woodland management has changed, particular threats from introduced species, and concern over the effects of climate change. Some of the smaller organisms remain poorly known, a situation unlikely to change as expertise in many is scant or being lost. This stock-check and look to the future will be a key source book to conservationists, naturalists, and professional biologists for many years to come.

This Handbook, first published in 2005, provides standard procedures for planning and conducting a survey of any species or habitat and for evaluating the data.

'The most important work on the birds of Scotland ever published' - British Birds This comprehensive study and review of the birds in Scotland follows on from where the celebrated two volumes of The Birds of Scotland (1953), by Dr Baxter and Miss Rintoul, left off. It does more than that, however, since not only has there been a profound increase in ornithological coverage and data (as reflected in the species accounts), there have also been great changes in habitat and environment since the days of Baxter & Rintoul. These aspects form the themes of the ten preliminary chapters reviewing the Scottish scene today in terms of habitat, conservation, birdwatching and the changes in species status and distribution. The species accounts, the backbone of the book, review the period 1950-83 but include, where practicable, records of rarities and details of counts up to the spring of 1985; there are also brief summaries of earlier data based on the researches of Baxter & Rintoul. In all, 497 species are dealt with. The texts of major species accounts are complemented by 173 distribution maps and many tables of relevant data, and there are 129 species drawings by a team of artists under the editorship of Donald Watson, who also contributes chapter head pieces and other drawings. A section of photographs illustrates the varied habitats typical of Scotland today. There are, further, appendices and an extensive bibliography. The book will be of great interest to all birdwatchers in Scotland but of special value, too, to the many thousands of birdwatching visitors from elsewhere in these islands and from countries abroad. The Scottish Ornithologists' Club, for whom the book is published, and all whose records and researches made the author's work possible, have reason to be proud of Valerie Thom's achievement.

This volume sets out for the first time the historical and current status of all the bird species found in Wales together with their present distribution. The rugged countryside of Wales has long been a destination for successive generations of naturalists, ornithologists, oologists and, latterly, birdwatchers. Since the pioneering days of Willoughby and Ray, Pennant and Edward Llwyd, a growing number of intrepid travellers have recorded the wildlife and other natural riches of the mountains and coastlines of Wales. Despite these beginnings and the more recent twentieth century vogue for birdwatching, no volume on the birds of Wales has been produced until now to serve the increasing need for scientifically valid information for conservation purposes. In the years that have passed since the first naturalists visited Wales, changes of unimaginable scale have taken place in the Welsh countryside which have had equally dramatic impacts on the native bird communities. A succession of bird species have either been eliminated deliberately by the hand of man - mainly birds of prey - or have been dispossessed by changes in land use, the spread of industrialisation, urbanisation and pollution, trends which continue today to the increasing detriment of even some of our most familiar countryside birds. Much fine habitat remains however, and new species have come in to colonise Wales and add to the magic of its countryside. The three authors, all staff of the RSPB in Wales, have between them an accumulated experience of some 80 years of first-hand knowledge of birds in the Principality. Their knowledge and love of the birds and Wales itself makes this authoritative volume a landmark both in Welsh and ornithological publishing.
