Women, Travel, and Writing in the Interwar Era engages feminist, temporal, and narrative theories to offer fresh examinations of interwar-era accounts by women about travel and movement and considers the use and limitations of time as a subversive force in their texts. This book makes a significant contribution to the under-examined study of women’s travel writing between the wars and synthesises and applies a variety of feminist, narrative, and postcolonial theories to excavate new understandings of the intersection between women, travel, and time in writing. The book studies the emergence of the aviatrix after the Great War and moves through to the representations of war in women’s travel on the brink of World War II. Each chapter offers a unique theoretical framework and examines how experiences of time impact perceptions of women’s bodies and identities, their engagement with history and discourse, and the problematic influence on colonialism. Whilst young ladies in the Victorian and Edwardian eras were expected to have many creative accomplishments, they were not expected to travel unaccompanied, and certainly not to the remote corners of Southeast Europe, then part of the crumbling Ottoman Empire. But Edith Durham was no ordinary lady. In 1900, at the age of 37, Durham set sail for the Balkans for the first time. Her trip was intended as a means of recovering from a period of ill-health, and as a break from the stifling monotony of caring for her ailing mother. Her experiences on this trip were to change the course of her life, kindling a profound love for the region which saw her return frequently in the following decades. She became a confidante of the King of Montenegro, ran a hospital in Macedonia and, following the outbreak of the First Balkan War in 1912, became one of the world's first female war correspondents. Back in England, she was renowned as an expert on the region, writing the highly successful book High Albania and, along with other aficionados such as the MP Aubrey Herbert, becoming an advocate for the people of the Balkans in British political life and society. King Zog of Albania once said that before Durham visited the Balkans, Albania was but a geographical expression. By the time she left, he added, her championship of his compatriots' desire for freedom had helped add a new state to the map. Durham was tremendously popular in the region itself, earning her the affectionate title 'Queen of the Mountains' and an enduring legacy which continues unabated until this day. Yet she has been all but forgotten in the country of her birth. Marcus Tanner here tells the fascinating story of Durham's relationship with the Balkans, painting a vivid portrait of a remarkable, and sometimes formidable, woman, who was several decades ahead of her time.

Scientific Essay from the year 2011 in the subject Law - Criminal process, Criminology, Law Enforcement, language: English, abstract: Murder is a penal act that erases all life functions of the person, it is the most serious crime committed against this inalienable and essential right. Traditional Albanian Law that is identified with Canon, and mainly with Canon of Leka, it's very important to be treated in relation with murder. In this project, I will treat the Aggravated murder topic based on three main canons applied throughout Albanian areas as: Canon of Leke Dukagjini-North, Canon of Skenderbeu-Mid and Canon of Laberia-South of Albanian populated areas. The vast importance to treat Aggravated murders based on Canon stands that often is rumored that 'it is reacted based on Canon' but the truth is different. Often people for their benefits, often financial benefit, often called upon respecting the moral, manhood of their family and relatives, and respecting the rules of the Canon, they have misused the norms-rules of the Canon and adopt it to their needs. The Canons have harshly condemned the murder. As the institution for the blood revenge against the perpetrator, his family and relatives existed, at the same time was established the institute for forgiveness as a solid ground for Murder prevention and as a solution to stop the revenge that could last forever and for generations. I believe that this modest seminar will be beneficial to those dealing with different legal, social and other fields of the studies.

This timely collection investigates how the Balkans and the West have constructed each other since 1945. Scholars from both sections of the continent explore a wide variety of fiction, film, journalism, travel writing and diplomatic records both to analyse Western European balkanism and to study Balkan representations of the West over the last fifty years. This dual emphasis exposes the representational practices that help to maintain a deeply divided Europe, and challenges the economic and political injustices that result. Despite the rise of postcolonialist analyses of global inequality, the current crises in many parts of South-East Europe have received scant attention in literary and cultural studies. The Balkans and the West addresses this deficiency. Ranging in focus from Serbian cinema to Romanian travel literature, from Western economic writings to Yugoslav fiction, and from public discourse in Albania to NATO's vast propaganda machine, the essays offer wide insight into representation and power in the contemporary European context.
