On Earth, Tyrell continued to experiment with further enhancements – because progress stops for no man. BOOK EXCERPT:

Early in the 21st Century, the Tyrell Corporation advanced robot evolution to the Nexus phase – creating artificial beings virtually identical to humans – known as Replicants. Superior in strength and agility, the Replicants functioned primarily as Off-world slave labor or in hazardous, high-collateral combat situations. After Replicants were declared illegal on Earth, special police operatives – called Blade Runners – had orders to kill or ‘retire’ any trespassers upon detection. Twenty years ago, Detective Aahna Ashina of the Los Angeles Police Department was one of the first to qualify for the assignment. Her colleagues called her Ash. She was the best of them. Today, her saga will end.

BOOK EXCERPT:

Early in the 21st Century, the Tyrell Corporation advanced Robot evolution into the Nexus phase – a being virtually identical to a human – known as a Replicant. Replicants were used Off-world as slave labor. Those who escaped to Earth were hunted by Blade Runner Units, ordered to kill any trespassing Replicant upon detection. In 2022, a Replicant attack on the Tyrell Corporation forced the company into bankruptcy and erased all records of existing Replicants. The surviving Nexus 8 models disappeared with the help of the Replicant Underground. Many Replicants remained in servitude, In 2027, Aahna “Ash” Ashina, rejoined the Blade Runner department, although her superiors are unaware that her lover, Freysa, is a leader in the Replicant Underground. The Replicant rebellion instigated by Yotun, a Nexus 6 Replicant who somehow lived beyond his four-year lifespan, has failed. The rejuvenating elixir that Yotun used to enhance his followers has failed too, resulting in their mass deaths. Now Yotun himself has started to succumb to the ravages of time, and even the regular blood transfusions from his loyal supporters no longer work. Convinced that an old diary of Eldon Tyrell holds the key to his survival, Yotun has set off to Eldon’s birthplace in search of a mysterious box that he believes holds the secret to extending his life. Meanwhile, Ash has been outed as a double-agent working for the Replicant Underground by Blade Runner Marlowe and arrested by the LAPD.

Cinema Memory Modernity

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Since its inception, cinema has evolved into not merely a ‘reflection’ but an indispensable index of human experience – especially our experience of time’s passage, of the present moment, and, most importantly perhaps, of the past, in both collective and individual terms. In this volume, Kilbourn provides a comparative theorization of the representation of memory in both mainstream Hollywood and international art cinema within an increasingly transnational context of production and reception. Focusing on European, North and South American, and Asian films, Kilbourn reads cinema as providing the viewer with not only the content and form of memory, but also with its own directions for use: the required codes and conventions for understanding and implementing this crucial prosthetic technology — an art of memory for the twentieth-century and beyond.

Culture Sociality And Morality

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

The chapters in this volume explore, engage and expand on the key thinkers and ideas of the Austrian, Virginia, and Bloomington schools of political economy. The book emphasizes the continuing relevance of the contributions of these schools of thought to our understanding of cultural, social, moral and historical processes for interdisciplinary research in the social sciences and humanities. An analysis of human action that deliberate divorces it from cultural, social, moral and historical processes will (at least) limit and (at worst) distort our understanding of human phenomena. The diversity in topics and approaches will make the volume of interest to readers in a variety of fields, including: anthropology, communications, East Asian languages & literature, economics, law, musicology, philosophy, and political science.
