BOOK EXCERPT:
No good deed goes unpunished. A snowy bit of assistance links her to a blood alpha and sends her into a world she never asked for. Coralynn does just enough to get by. There is no point in trying harder; the world always pulls her down. She works at a restaurant in a ridiculous outfit and is ordered to rescue a limo and help some wealthy investors get to their establishment. It is the moment that Coralynn’s life skids sideways. Meeting a blood alpha in the snow was surprising. Having him show up at her home was astonishing. Feeling her body changing to accommodate him is disturbing. She becomes his lover, shares his bed, and starts to believe that her life might stay bright, and then, an attack, injuries, and a long recovery time with the book club’s caretakers makes her re-evaluate her place in the world and how lonely life was when the trust was brutally destroyed.

BOOK EXCERPT:
In this verse translation of Perceval; or, The Story of the Grail, Ruth Harwood Cline restores to life the thematically crucial Arthurian tale of the education of a knight in his search for the Holy Grail. Cline's translation, faithful to the highly synthetic, deliberately ornate nature of medieval French, follows Perceval from his home in Wales, through his rich and raucous adventures as a member of the fraternity of knights, to his climactic meeting with the Fisher King. Paralyzed by his first glimpse of the Grail, Perceval fails to save the ailing king. Distraught, the knight begins a new quest for the Grail, a journey on the road of penitence and faith. Perceval's venture, the true test of his knighthood, ends without conclusion; the death of author Chrétien de Troyes left unsaid and undetermined the success of Perceval's quest.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Innovative documentary filmmaker; friend of Andy Warhol, John Cage, Jasper Johns, Robert Rauschenberg, and other leading figures of the New York art world; radical leftist critic of the Establishment; and legendary bon vivant: Emile de Antonio (1919-1989) was a larger-than-life personality and a key figure in the development of post-war American cinema. The films de Antonio made between 1963 and 1989 -- including Point of Order, Rush to Judgment, In the Year of the Pig, Painters Painting, and Millhouse: A White Comedy -- revolutionized the documentary format and inspired a generation of artists and filmmakers. A decade after his death, his cinematic legacy -- ranging from the brilliantly edited compilation of the 1954 Army-McCarthy hearings that helped construct Senator Joseph McCarthy's reputation as a rogue demagogue (Point of Order) to a meditative juxtaposition of documents about F.B.I. director J. Edgar Hoover and intimate footage drawn from the filmmaker's own life (Mr. Hoover and I) -- remains unparalleled in American documentary film. Emile de Antonio: A Reader is the first full-length volume devoted to this major American filmmaker. It collects interviews with and writings by de Antonio; reviews and other critical material that detail the genesis, production history, and reception of his films; a comprehensive filmography; and an in-depth biographical essay. Offering a long overdue assessment of de Antonio's career, this indispensable book also makes a significant contribution to our understanding of American independent cinema at its most politically engaged.

BOOK EXCERPT:
It is fictional yet deals with two of the greatest of all American governmental frauds, the Vietnam War, the drug war and their effects on ordinary Americans and patriotic soldiers. It opens in prologue with a deputy police chief examining a crime scene. A U.S. senator and four others have been shot down on the front steps of a county courthouse in a small city in northern California. The deputy chief believes the senator was the primary target because he is shot in the back dead-center between the shoulder blades. Officers find where the shots came from and the deputy chief arrives and is led to a small empty room still smelling of burnt gunpowder. The chief finds an empty cartridge case in the caliber .300 Winchester Magnum. With this, he remembers many years before where a similar rifle cartridge was used, not in defense, but to deliberately ambush law-enforcement personnel on a marijuana plantation raid.
