***The Instant National Bestseller*** A Next Big Idea Club must-read title for January 2024 The definitive, paradigm-shifting guide to healing intergenerational trauma—weaving together scientific research with practical exercises and stories from the therapy room—from Dr. Mariel Buqué, PhD, a Columbia University–trained trauma-informed psychologist and practitioner of holistic healing From Dr. Mariel Buqué, a leading trauma psychologist, comes this groundbreaking guide to transforming intergenerational pain into intergenerational abundance. With Break the Cycle, she delivers the definitive guide to healing inherited trauma. Weaving together scientific research with practical exercises and stories from the therapy room, Dr. Buqué teaches readers how trauma is transmitted from one generation to the next and how they can break the cycle through tangible therapeutic practices, learning to pass down strength instead of pain to future generations. When a physical wound is left unhealed, it continues to cause pain and can infect the whole body. When emotions are left unhealed, they similarly cause harm that spreads to other parts of our lives, hurting our family, friends, community members, and others. Eventually, this hurt can injure an entire lineage, metastasizing across years and generations. This is intergenerational trauma. This trauma is why some of us become estranged from our families, why some of us are people pleasers, why some of us find ourselves in codependent relationships. This trauma can be rooted in the experiences of ancestors, who may have suffered due to unhealthy family dynamics, and it can be collective, the result of a shared experience like systemic oppression, or harmful ingrained behaviors in a culture like the acceptance of physical discipline of children, or even a natural disaster like a pandemic. These wounds are complex, impacting our minds, bodies, and spirits. Healing requires a holistic approach that has so far been absent from the field of psychology. Until now.

Breaking The Cycle

BOOK EXCERPT:

This book presents a fresh look at stopping the cycle of child molestation by attacking the source, the child molester, instead of trying to deal with the end product of abuse, the victim/survivor. The book is broken into two parts. Chapters 1 through 4 address the issues of the child molestor and what can be done to stop the molestor's cycle of abusing children. Chapters 5 through 8 are to help those who are dealing with either the offender or the survivor of the child sexual abuse. Parents of sexually abused children may find the answers they are seeking. Spouses of offenders may come to understand a part of their offending spouse that has been a dark mystery. Various victims of sexual abuse should find this book of interest. It deals with the offenders of sexual abuse and what can and should be done to stop them. This is done by exposing the faulty logic used by offenders. It attacks their basic personality, life style, and erroneous thought processes. There is no attempt to justify the behavior of the child offender. There is no softening of the effect of the abusers' past behavior. It exposes the make-up of the offender and suggests a path of recovery from this dysfunctional behavior. This approach opens a door long closed to look beyond the therapeutic treatment of child molesters to reveal what works and what does not and why. The hope is to develop answers for the generic question many victims ask - "WHY?", as well as answer the specific question - "WHY ME?" Although a lot of research has been done on this subject, this book is not one of theory but of experiences. It relates to the therapeutic experience with examples. This should not be considered a 'How-to' book but more a guide for those wanting to recover. This book also addresses the concerns of those close to the offender. If you have been thrown into having to deal with child sexual abuse, you will find answers to many of your questions. What you can or should expect from the legal system, from therapy, from social welfare department is discussed. It addresses such questions as "Why didn't I see it?" or "How could they!?!" in a light seldom revealed. Some questions as "Will I ever be 'normal'?" or "Will anyone ever be able to love me for who I really am?" are on the minds of offenders and victims. Some of these answers lie within this book. A very fundamental area facing the issue and treatment of sexual abuse is gender. Historically, the male is the stereotypical abuser and the female is the stereotypical victim. This is one of the many myths of childhood sexual abuse. Female child molestors make up almost 40% of the child molesting population. For every two girls sexually abused slightly more than one boy is abused. While the book was written with stereotypical male offender in mind, it can be used by female child molestors and male victims. This book tries to address the gender problem by avoiding gender terms unless appropriate. Avoiding gender terms is not possible without some redefinition of the use of pronouns. The only non-gender singular possessive pronoun is its. This is also a non-human possessive term and inappropriate in describing the issues of already wounded individuals. The non-gender pronouns used throughout this book are they, them, their which are normally used as plural forms. In this book, these terms are used as non-gender singular as well as non-gender plural forms. While this is not proper usage, the narrative is easier to read than if the alternate forms of s/he or he/she or his/hers were used. There is no easy solution to this problem. Examples and experiences used to demonstrate a point may be a composite of experiences from various victims and offenders. The names used have been changed unless permission was granted otherwise. Gender terms used in the examples are correct. Abstr

School Violence

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

A timely investigation of the history, legislation, and perpetrators of school violence, this guide debunks the myths and misconceptions about this terrible problem of national concern. With school violence on the rise, schools have implemented security safeguards like never before in the form of metal detectors, video cameras, and armed guards. School communities have mixed opinions regarding these drastic prevention measures—many welcome the protection, while some condemn the reminders of violence these tactics evoke. This comprehensive text introduces the history of school violence in the United States, providing an overview of proposed causes—from violent video games, to inadequate parental involvement, to bullying by classmates—and detailing the pros and cons of various deterrents. Experienced criminologist Laura Finley incorporates personal reflections, primary source data, and profiles of key figures to address the painful reality of school shootings and other violent acts. The text expounds upon the characteristics of victims, individuals who are most likely to carry out violence, and common types of assaults. Chapters include a discussion on current legislation; stories of infamous perpetrators; activists who are working to make schools safer; and school, community, and societal risk factors.

Anxiety Rx

BOOK EXCERPT:

From physician and neuroscientist Russell Kennedy, MD comes an award-winning book that offers a revolutionary, life-changing approach to healing anxiety. Break the cycle of anxiety with the newly upgraded and expanded second edition. After years of trying different therapies for his debilitating anxiety without success, Dr. Russell Kennedy had an epiphany: anxiety does not start in the brain. Anxiety starts in the body, where trauma is stored and physical and emotional perception begin. Alarm bells originating in the body are what trigger those anxious thoughts that we call anxiety, and Russ realized that true healing starts only when we learn not to conflate the two. He understood that existing therapies focused only on the mind would never get to the root of the problem—at best, they could help manage symptoms, but they’d never truly heal anxiety. Wanting to make a difference for the millions who suffer from anxiety disorder, Russ created Anxiety Rx, a book that blends his personal story with medical science, neuroscience, and developmental psychology. Readers learn how to sever the connection between the somatic alarm and the flood of anxious thoughts—in the process they begin to heal old trauma and gain a sense of control previously unknown. Russ offers techniques not only for our thinking minds, but for our feeling bodies, changing not just our mindset, but our “body-set.” Unraveling the intricate relationship between anxiety, the body, and the mind, Anxiety Rx offers a profound path toward healing and growth.
