Building Sustainability in East Asia: Policy, Design and People illustrates the holistic approaches and individual strategies to building sustainability that have been implemented in construction projects in Asia. Top-down and bottom-up approaches (from formulating policy to constructing individual buildings) are effective in terms of the sustainable development of cities, and this book covers both, illustrated with a range of case study developments.

With cities rapidly encroaching onto surrounding lands, the notion of “eco-city” proposes an innovative yet pragmatic approach to designing, building and operating cities in a way that the destructive impact of human urban activity upon nature will be significantly reduced.This book comprises of papers from a workshop organized by the East Asian Institute on Eco-cities in East Asia on 27 February 2009 in Singapore. The final report of the Southeast Asia Subregional Preparatory Meeting for the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD), held in October 2001, is presented in this overview of the summit. Discussed are the main achievements, lessons learned, key institutional and policy issues, and major constraints in Agenda 21's implementation. Also presented are new challenges and opportunities, the summit's action-oriented decisions, and subregional policy platforms and mechanisms for implementation.
