Building Your Future As Young Africans

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Going by world history, mankind is always faced with all kinds of challenges that are peculiar to each nation but the patriotic or unpatriotic attitudes of the citizens always determine if the country would overcome the problems or not. Many African youths who see and feel the problems in their countries sometimes blame the Governments. Consequently, a lot of them are enlisted as rebels who often times fight against their Governments. They are also involved in crimes, terrorism and other atrocities without realizing their deadly implications in future. Youths are often ignorant of the fact that what they do today will determine what their tomorrow and the future of their countries would be. This book makes serious attempts to help both youths and adults in Africa to understand the normal process of real success through the resource materials inside. The author explains how problems can be seen as opportunities to excel in life, using real life stories as cases for studies, quoting relevant authorities to buttress his points. The book is also designed to teach African youths of the need to build their nations by encouraging them to enhance their values through skill acquisitions, setting goals and making best use of their potentials and the available resources.

Beyond Stereotypes In Black And White

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This book spotlights the plight of African American boys and men, examining multiple systems beyond education, incarceration, and employment to assess their impact on the mental and physical health of African American boys and men—and challenges everyday citizens to help start a social transformation. Beyond Stereotypes in Black and White: How Everyday Leaders Can Build Healthier Opportunities for African American Boys and Men exposes the daily plight of African American boys and men, identifying the social and policy infrastructure that ensnares them in a downward spiral that worsens with each exposure to our system that offers unemployment, low-wage work, marginalization, and incarceration. The book examines why African American boys and men are more sickly and die younger than any other racial group in the United States, have very few health coverage options, and are consistently incarcerated at rates that are wildly disproportionate to their representation of the U.S. population; and it documents how this tremendous injustice comes with a cost that burdens all groups in American society, not just African Americans. Additionally, the author challenges readers to see that all of us must act individually and collectively to right this social wrong.

The Quests For New World Order

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

While some historical accounts are distorted, so many parts were written long before they eventually become history. This is because a clique sees the need to destroy the old order and pave the way for the New World Order. The quest to dominate the world and fuse all nations together as one entity is an age-long battle which becomes more profound and pronounced in the modern days with the use of chemical, biological, psychological, spiritual and other weapons. With presentations of documentary, circumstantial and other evidences most of which are made available by ancient and modern researchers and writers, this book attempts to shed light on what actually characterized global events like the French revolution, world wars, civil wars, virus pandemic and other catastrophes that plague humanity. These research works address the question that was raised in the book, titled “Pawn In The Game” by William Guy Carr who asked, “why the Human Race can't live in peace and enjoy the bounties and blessing God provides for our use and benefit in such abundance?” This book also serves as a warning that when the New World Order emerges, humans will become semi-robots that are shackled into Computer Network through the use of Artificial Intelligence (IA), as opposed to Natural Intelligence.

African Political And Economic Philosophy With Africapitalism

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This book creates (on the one hand) and explores (on the other hand) philosophies of African development suitable for Black sub-Saharan African countries. As an academic discipline focused on thought informed by indigenous moral values among Black peoples in the sub-Saharan region, African political philosophy involves philosophizing normatively about government by traditional Black African people with the aim of advancing a better African society. African political philosophy does not mean that its themes, views, concepts, and approaches are exclusively African. It also does not mean that only thinkers in Africa could hold these concepts, nor does it mean that all African thinkers hold the same views. “African” is used geographically in African political philosophy to demarcate certain perspectives that are unique to sub-Saharan African thought and practice that tend not to be the case elsewhere. An African political and economic philosophy should address the origin and method of political power, the guarantee of human and civil liberties, and how economic goods are generated and distributed in African societies. Africapitalism, as a new economic philosophy, obviates the inadequacies in Afrisocialism and offers an option for an African economic philosophy. Edited by Ephraim-Stephen Essien and Frank Aragbonfoh Abumere, the contributors to African Political and Economic Philosophy with Africapitalism: Concepts for African Leadership ask the question: can a neo-Afrisocialism offer anything good for the Africa?

Dare To Invent The Future

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

A rallying manifesto for the innovative problem-solving we need to build a better, more verdant, and sustainable planetary existence. Academics are letting Africa down. With all that we know, what do we have to show for it? Whose lives have been changed for the better by it? What have we done for and with our communities lately? In this provocative book—the first in a trilogy—Clapperton Chakanetsa Mavhunga argues that our critical thinkers must become actual thinker-doers. Taking its title from one of Thomas Sankara’s most inspirational speeches, Dare to Invent the Future looks for moments in Africa’s story where precedents of critical thought and knowledge in service of problem-solving are evident to inspire readers to dare to invent such a knowledge system. Mavhunga revisits insights from Edward Wilmot Blyden, Booker T. Washington, Aimé Césaire, Frantz Fanon, Amílcar Cabral, Julius Nyerere, and Thomas Sankara to illustrate how the academic disciplines have been, and could be, deployed in the service of and through problem-solving, building on what people are doing and know. At its core, he writes, knowledge in the service of and through problem-solving derives from reading the past for new questions, doing due diligence in the present, and contriving an anticipatory approach toward the future. Questioning the fundamental premises of Western and white knowledge production, especially regarding science and technology, Mavhunga proposes in this book refreshingly new approaches to thinking-doing that stem from African realities, in the hopes of inspiring a generation that will run toward, not away from, problems to solve them.

Libraries Literacy And African American Youth

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This important book is a call to action for the library community to address the literacy and life outcome gaps impacting African American youth. It provides strategies that enable school and public librarians to transform their services, programs, and collections to be more responsive to the literacy strengths, experiences, and needs of African American youth. According to National Assessment of Educational Progress (NEAP), only 18 percent of African American fourth graders and 17 percent of African American eighth graders performed at or above proficiency in reading in 2013. This book draws on research from various academic fields to explore the issues surrounding African American literacy and to aid in developing culturally responsive school and library programs with the goal of helping to close the achievement gap and improve the quality of life for African American youth. The book merges the work of its three authors along with the findings of other researchers and practitioners, highlighting exemplary programs, such as the award-winning Pearl Bailey Library Program, the Maker Jawn initiative at the Free Library of Philadelphia, and the Blue Ribbon Mentor Advocate writing institute in the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools, among others. Readers will understand how these culturally responsive programs put theory and research-based best practices into local action and see how to adapt them to meet the needs of their communities.
