Sociology Of World Heritage

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Taking mainly Japanese and other Asian case studies as examples, Ogino examines the motivations behind the preservation of objects and sites considered to be of cultural significance. Using mainly the perspectives of Japanese approaches to cultural heritage, the book critiques the European logic of cultural heritage enshrined by UNESCO. It contrasts a Western emphasis on monuments and sites, with an Asian emphasis on more intangible forms of heritage, which place less emphasis on a linear view of time. More practically, the authors also analyse the positive and negative impacts that UNESCO-listed status has had on sites in Asia, including Angkor Wat, Nagasaki, and Lijiang. Finally, they address fundamental questions about who gets to decide what counts as cultural heritage, and what the underlying rationale is for actively preserving heritage in the first place. This books is a thoughtful and provocative analysis of issues that will be of interest to sociologists, as well as scholars and students of cultural heritage.

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

I think most of us have been bullied at one time in our life or another. I believe there were times we may not have realize we were being bullied! If we were not being hit or yelled at we were not being bullied. Not true! Have you ever had something gnaw away at you in the pit of your stomach and you did not know what it was? I have. Have you ever been left out of a conversation not only when you were young but now as adults? It hurts and is so uncomfortable. Have you ever been laughed at and to you for no reason at all? Have you ever had people just look down at you? Have you ever had people make you feel worthless without having to say anything? Has anyone ever teased you until it hurt? Yes, these are all forms of bullying. Have you ever yelled at your children and I don’t mean just normal mom and dad discipline? Have you said things you should not have and did not realize it was emotional abuse to your children? The things that I have heard parents say are stupid and shut up. That is just a couple things. Think about it and then apologize to your children – no matter how old or young they are! Just love them! If any of the above sounds familiar, you are a bully! That is right! Re-read the bad feelings above and if you have done that to anyone you know, well maybe you need to tell them just how sorry you are! This goes for bosses also! Being a boss does not give you the right to be a bully! If you think you will get a better employee that way you are so wrong!

Girls Aggression And Intersectionality

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

From media images of "mean girls" to the disproportionate punishment of Black, Latina and/or queer girls in schools and the justice system, female aggression has become a public concern. Scholars, educators, policymakers and parents are scrambling to respond to the perceived upsurge in girls’ bullying, peer pressure, and aggression/violence. Girls, Aggression and Intersectionality examines how intersecting social identities – such as race, ethnicity, class, sexuality, age, and others - shape media representations of, and criminal justice reactions to, female aggression. The book focuses on three overarching questions: How do race, class, and/or sexuality influence media images of female aggression? How do aggressive girls’ intersecting identities affect law enforcement and criminal justice responses to their aggression? How are diverse groups of girls trying to resist their labelling and criminalization? Using intersectionality as a conceptual framework, this insightful volume deconstructs a unitary analysis of "female aggression" and transforms the mainstream discourse that paints girls as inherently "mean." Girls, Aggression and Intersectionality will appeal to undergraduate and postgraduate students, as well as postdoctoral researchers, interested in fields including Gender Studies, Women’s Studies, Youth Studies, Criminology and Media and Culture.

Beyond Sticks And Stones

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Most of the time, children don't even bother telling their parents that they are being bullied. This is because they do not want to be embarrassed before their parents. It is the innate nature of a child to make his parents proud, and when they find out that he is being bullied by another student, wouldn't the parents think that their child is not ready to stand up for himself? This is the first mistake that children make; not telling their parents. And this is what a bully thrives on. He knows that there's going to be no action against him. He knows that there isn't going to be anybody from a higher age group to stop him. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED for Teachers, Parents and Teens, especially in this day of social media abuse and harassment. Are those who are bullied, victims? You bet! Is your child bullied? Maybe you aren't aware of the signs. Cyberbullying, harassment, embarrassing others, tormenting, threatening or humiliating, and spousal abuse are all considered 'bullying.' It happens to children, teens, and adults. It occurs in pre-school, elementary school, college, home, and in the workplace. It is apparent in all walks of life. Bullying occurs in every town, city, state, province and country, and it has many ugly faces. But with today's technology, mobile phones, internet, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and a host of other platforms, I'm going to emphasize more on children, students, and teens, because that is where it commences and for most, carries over into their adult lives.
