Bush Boy To Bug Man

BOOK EXCERPT:

Ten years in the life of a young New Zealander in the Forest Service - he's physically tough, untutored but keen to get ahead - bring about an amazing metamorphosis. The Technical Trainee of the early pages is barely recognisable as the double-degreed professional entomologist - the 'bug man' - who emerges in statu imaginis at the end of 1954. Adventures and dangers lie in wait along the trees to bees trail for the budding academic - and they're not all winged or four-legged! This delightfully written autobiographical 'slice' shows how gutsy determination and two inspirational texts took the author to his chosen speciality and an international career. Born in Ruawai, Tom White grew up in Hawera. After his time in the NZ Forest Service as a Technical Trainee, he was a Forest Entomologist at the FRI in Rotorua. From there he went to the University of Adelaide in South Australia and was a Senior Lecturer in Zoology before going to the University of the South Pacific as Professor of Biology. From there he returned to Australia as Dean of Applied Science at Charles Sturt University. He has also lectured and researched in Britain, the USA, South Africa, China and Italy, and is now an Hon. Research Fellow at the Waite Institute of the University of Adelaide. He is the author of ecological research papers and two books, but this is his first venture outside the world of scientific writing.

BOOK EXCERPT:

Benjamin Appel is of that rare species, a native New Yorker. Born in 1907, he was raised in the tough, Hell’s-kitchen district of the West 50’s. Like any other kid in a tough city neighborhood, he had to fight for his self-respect as a human being. At De Witt Clinton high school he was a football, crew, and track star. After graduation, he entered the University of Pennsylvania but later transferred to New York University and then Lafayette. He took a post-graduate course at Columbia. While at Lafayette, he published his first book, a volume of verse. Since then he has written five books and has had more than one hundred short stories published. His books are a study of American crime and lawlessness, beginning with small-time holdups, going on to crime as an organized monopoly, emphasizing it in prostitution, labor racketeering, and finally, crime organized into native fascism. He has held a variety of jobs - bank clerk, factory hand, farm hand, lumberjack, tenement house inspector, professional fisherman. Until recently, when he was called to Washington, D.C. to take a position with the OCD, he was employed as a workman in the plant of the Republic Aviation Corporation on Long Island. He is married and has one daughter. His best-known books are Brain Guy, People Talk, Run Around, and Power House. (1943)

First Son

BOOK EXCERPT:

In one of the most unprecedented developments in the history of national politics, George W. Bush abruptly emerged to lead all presidential aspirants in the national polls for the 2000 election. Yet voters know very little about the man, beyond his famous name and his place in one of the nation's most powerful political dynasties. First Son is a true, riveting family saga about extraordinary power and politics in America and in the unharnessed state--a state of mind--called Texas. The story begins with the turn-of-the-century emergence of the influential Bush-Walker clan and of Prescott Bush, the Connecticut patrician who ingrained in his family an ethos that continues to exert influence on his son, former President George Bush, and his grandsons, George W. and Jeb. How these scions of the Bush dynasty struggle to live up to their enduring legacy is the central theme of this colorful and perceptive portrait the first authentative book on the governor of Texas. In the past year, award-winning Texas writer Bill Minutaglio has met with George W. Bush and interviewed dozens of people close to him, from his brother Governor Jeb Bush of Florida to uncles and cousins, from current and former political advisers to high-ranking insiders from his father's years in the White House. Fraternity buddies, political operatives, George W.'s employers, and even ardent critics of the Bush family bring this story to life--from the society circles in his native Connecticut to the family compound in Maine to the backwaters of his adopted Texas. The result is a book that is nuanced, insightful, and surprising in the contradictions and complexities it reveals about this man. First Son vividly reconstructs George W. Bush's boarding-school days at one of the country's most exclusive institutions; his tenure in one of Yale's secret societies and as president of his unfettered fraternity; his attempts to follow his family's million-dollar path into the wide-open Texas oil patch; his role in major league baseball as the public face and head cheerleader for the Texas Rangers; and, finally, his rise to governor of Texas and national political force, executed with more hard-edged calculation than many people realize. Written with precision, verve, and fair-minded balanace, First Son will be the political story of 2000--the eye-opening tale of a natural-born politician.

Badman S Pass

BOOK EXCERPT:

Badger Kershaw was becoming a familiar figure on the frontier after the War between the States. Riding an Appaloosa with Lobo, his dog-wolf hybrid, often by his side, he was feared by most outlaws on the dodge on whom there was a bounty. It was not a savory profession, perhaps, but Kershaw was honest about what he did. Frontier lawmen for the most part were accustomed to dealing with Kershaw. When the fugitive was willing to surrender-which was less frequent than it might be thought-Kershaw would bring in an outlaw alive, but it was not an option he encountered very often. Generally it was one man against another, but in what would possibly be Badger Kershaw's greatest feat, the odds were quite different. Colonel Benjamin Grierson had been Kershaw's commanding officer during the War between the States. When, years after the war's end, Grierson's daughter was one of the four women seized in a train hold-up and taken prisoner, Grierson appealed again to the man who had once served under him to rescue the women from the outlaw gang. Kershaw surprised the army when he chose to do the job entirely alone, despite the incredible odds against him.
