BOOK EXCERPT:
This volume brings together Nussbaum's published papers on the relationship between literature and philosophy, especially moral philosophy. The papers, many of them previously inaccessible to non-specialist readers, deal with such fundamental issues as the relationship between style and content in the exploration of ethical issues; the nature of ethical attention and ethical knowledge and their relationship to written forms and styles; and the role of the emotions in deliberation and self-knowledge. Nussbaum investigates and defends a conception of ethical understanding which involves emotional as well as intellectual activity, and which gives a certain type of priority to the perception of particular people and situations rather than to abstract rules. She argues that this ethical conception cannot be completely and appropriately stated without turning to forms of writing usually considered literary rather than philosophical. It is consequently necessary to broaden our conception of moral philosophy in order to include these forms. Featuring two new essays and revised versions of several previously published essays, this collection attempts to articulate the relationship, within such a broader ethical inquiry, between literary and more abstractly theoretical elements.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Here, presented in one volume, are the four stories that comprise the 'Learning To Love' series, a seriously hot and provocative romance by Lucia Jordan, written in her signature style of high passion, searing depictions and emotion. After his girlfriend of six years publicly rejects his marriage proposal, Marc is hurt and pissed off. All he wants to do is get away, but he hadn’t planned for the blizzard that causes him to go off the road. Forced to walk a mile in the blinding snow, he happens upon a bed and breakfast owned and operated by Alyson – the girl from college he always used to fantasize about. Alyson vaguely remembers Marc, but definitely not as clearly as he remembers her. But as they begin to talk, things heat up and Alyson finds herself naked and orgasming beneath him. It’s glorious, but when it’s over, the reality of what she has done comes crashing down around her. She’d sworn to stay true to her fiancé, Greg, who had died while serving his country. But she hadn’t, and the guilt is consuming her.

BOOK EXCERPT:
A highly-regarded spiritual teacher and interpreter of the Bhagavad Gita shows how love is a skill – one which we can all learn, and apply, to build lasting, loving relationships. A lasting, loving relationship comes high on the list of life goals for many of us – so why is it so hard to achieve? And where can we find help? Eknath Easwaran is a highly regarded, much-loved spiritual teacher and author who has guided thousands of readers over the decades. Love is a skill, he tells us, and one that – with some effort – we can all learn. With humor, wisdom, lived experience, and lots of compassion, he gives us practical insights and spiritual advice that anyone from any background can follow to find true love. This is the second of two short ebooks from Easwaran titled Learning to Love, and you can read them in any order. Here he draws on two sources of inspiration. One is the Bhagavad Gita, the Indian scripture for which he is a leading translator and interpreter. The other is Shakespeare’s famous sonnet on love, which he knew well as a Professor of English in India before coming to the US. He comments on it in the light of all our modern challenges and offers his own light-hearted update on the plot of Romeo and Juliet. But you don’t need to know anything about these sources to enjoy this little book. Download it, read it, and get to work learning to love.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Alongside Spenser, Sidney and the early Donne, Shakespeare is the major poet of the 16th century, largely because of the status of his remarkable sequence of sonnets. Professor Cousins' new book is the first comprehensive study of the Sonnets and narrative poems for over a decade. He focuses in particular on their exploration of self-knowledge, sexuality, and death, as well as on their ambiguous figuring of gender. Throughout he provides a comparative context, looking at the work of Shakespeare's contemporaries. The relation between Shakespeare's non-dramatic verse and his plays is also explored.
