BOOK EXCERPT:
The theme of the conference this year was Critical CALL, drawing inspiration from the work carried out in the broader field of Critical Applied Linguistics. The term ‘critical’ has many possible interpretations, and as Pennycook (2001) outlines, has many concerns. It was from these that we decided on the conference theme, in particular the notion that we should question the assumptions that lie at the basis of our praxis, ideas that have become ‘naturalized’ and are not called into question. Over 200 presentations were delivered in 68 different sessions, both in English and Italian, on topics related specifically to the theme and also more general CALL topics. 94 of these were submitted as extended papers and appear in this volume of proceedings.

BOOK EXCERPT:
The theme selected for the 2019 EuroCALL conference held in Louvain-la-Neuve was ‘CALL and complexity’. As languages are known to be intrinsically and linguistically complex, as are the many determinants of learning (additional) languages, complexity is viewed as a challenge to be embraced collectively. The 2019 conference allowed us to pay tribute to providers of CALL solutions and to recognize the complexity of their task. We hope you will enjoy reading this volume as it offers a rich glimpse into the numerous debates that took place during EuroCALL 2019. We look forward to continuing those debates and discussions with you at the next EuroCALL conferences!

BOOK EXCERPT:
Instruments for Research into Second Languages is an accessible introduction to understanding and evaluating existing and emerging methodologies in L2 research. The book provides an introduction to the data collection materials available in the IRIS database. IRIS is an open access, searchable repository of instruments used to elicit data for research into second and foreign language learning and teaching. The book is aimed at graduate students, researchers and educators in the fields of Applied Linguistics and Second Language Acquisition. Featuring contributions from top scholars in the field, this dynamic volume includes empirical research carried out using innovative instruments held in IRIS, offering insights into their basic mechanics, how and why they are used, as well as the challenges they can present. The chapters describe the kinds of data (evidence about knowledge, processing, interaction, learning, and motivation) that result from these methods, and they discuss conditions that lead to reliable and valid data collection and analysis. This unique collection provides researchers, professionals, and students with up-to-date responses to practical and theoretical questions about how second language learning and teaching can be investigated using the IRIS database of instruments. IRIS was funded by the Economic and Social Research Council and is a long term British Academy Research Project.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Book is a practical resource for teacher trainers who are about to deal with the challenging and exciting task of preparing language teachers to integrate technology into their everyday professional practice. As research yields results that show the solid and growing potential of technology for language education, Computer Assisted Language Learning has become a rather common subject in teacher training programmes worldwide. Based on the author’s experience in teacher education, the present book aims at providing trainers with thorough methodological foundations and practical understanding to design and implement effective CALL courses. To achieve this goal, the volume collects and harmonises the different sources that constitute the base-knowledge of CALL Teacher Education and gradually leads the reader from theory down to practice. The volume, the first monograph on this subject, offers a comprehensive overview of CALL Teacher Education, both as an academic discipline and as a practice ambit, and explores among others the following topics:• The relationship between technology and language learning;• The integration of technology into language education;• Theoretical foundations of CALL teacher training;• Frameworks and standards for CALL education;• Approaches and processes;• CALL training procedures;• Curriculum design.

BOOK EXCERPT:
The contributions in this volume focus on a human-centered perspective, namely the definition of smartness in terms of three qualities or dimensions: personalization (adaptation to the learner and the teacher), contextualization (adaptation to the sociocultural, educational, and geotemporal context of the learner) and socialization (the extent to which CALL stimulates interaction and relatedness between the learner, co-learner, teacher, and other stakeholders). Contributing authors are established scholars coming from different continents, using different technologies, and representing different points of view.
