Although cities constitute the key contributors to unsustainable development, especially due to their ecological and equity impacts, they are also viewed as the vehicle for the transition to a sustainable future for humanity both in terms of technologies as well as policies and lifestyle changes. This book introduces the theoretical principles which underpin the required transition to sustainable cities in general and Cape Town in particular. The subsequent fourteen chapters tackle more specific areas of interventions and the key constraints towards realisation of related transition interventions in the city of Cape Town.

Cape Town is one of the wealthiest cities in the Southern African region. Yet, the vast majority of households in poor areas of the city experience food insecurity. This paper uses AFSUN data to examine the characteristics and drivers of food insecurity in Cape Town. While food insecurity correlates closely with income poverty and household structure, broader factors also impact upon urban food security, most notably urban design and market structure. Efforts to address urban food insecurity should therefore not simply target the household. Instead, a food systems approach is necessary, which considers supply chains, procurement, nutrition support programmes, public health, environmental sustainability, water and waste, the support of local enterprise and so on. Furthermore, this approach must consider the geography of the urban food system, in particular planning and zoning regulations regarding the location of both formal and informal food retail within low-income areas of the city.

This report provides a platform for the development of a forward-looking, cross-cutting regional development strategy in Cape Town, South Africa and proposes new "second generation" governance reforms to consolidate previous achievements and respond to emerging obstacles.

The book presents the history of water supply to Cape Town, leading up to the worst ever drought recorded, through political turmoil impacting on drought interventions and resulting in the adoption of an integrated water strategy. Regions reliant on water supply from rainfed dams have always been vulnerable to the impact of drought. This is exacerbated by the uncertainty of future rainfall, which is never guaranteed, and reliance is placed on modelling using historic data. While weather has always been variable, climate has been generally reliable. With anthropogenic activity causing changes in climate, the validity of modelling based on history is currently not fully trusted. Unless the storage capacity is sufficient to carry through numerous seasons of poor rainfall, even with water restrictions to match demand and supply in times of depleted rainfall, the risk of reservoirs running dry remains a threat.

This book explores the dynamic roles and linkages of public sector institutions and civil society actors in housing provision for the urban poor in South Africa. Based on actor-centred and network theories, two cases of civil society alliances are analysed. The book reveals that existing civil society structures are hybrids that can oscillate between networks and organisations. Moreover, they establish informal governance spaces with state actors outside the institutional channels provided by government. The emergence of oscillating structures and the informalisation of horizontal governance represent new challenges for local decision-making processes. Co-operation and action-oriented approaches in housing seemingly need to be based on a more detailed understanding of the complex interfaces, which go far beyond the conventional ideal of partnerships and participation between sectors.

This book identifies new formations of race, racism and ethnicity at the intersection of neoliberalism, security, urban governance and the law through a comparative, international analysis of police organizations and practices. It pushes analytical and theoretical boundaries by examining racialization and ethnicization in locations where the topic is politically taboo, such as in China, India and France, and where racial and ethnic hierarchies have supposedly been banished to the past, as in Bosnia and South Africa. This book also examines police and security services not as mere artefacts of state authority or the prerogatives of capitalist development, but as relatively autonomous and uniquely productive intersections of new kinds of state, social and cultural formations that are remaking race, embodiment, fear and control on their own terms. This book was published as a special issue of Ethnic and Racial Studies.

The field of crystallization holds many challenges, with the physical and chemical complexity of the crystallization process being core to the dynamic nature of the field. Exciting advances are currently being achieved in the areas of nanoparticle formation, product and particle design and methods of particle characterisation. There is also significant progress and innovation in the design, scale-up and control of crystallizers. These key developments are reflected in the session themes of the 14th BIWIC (Bremen International Workshop on Industrial Crystallization) with the technical programme incorporating a wide range of topics, such as; The formation and stabilisation of nano particles; Polymorphs and co-crystals in pharmaceutical preparation; Product and particle design; Kinetics of crystallization and measurement of crystal properties; Freeze, Antisolvent, Reactive and Melt crystallization; and Design, scale-up and control of crystallization processes at the industrial scale.
