A growing body of research identifies strong links between children’s health, social and educational outcomes; it also notes the reciprocal benefits of access to quality education on individual and family health status. In response to these findings, the World Health Organization developed the concept of the Health-Promoting School (HPS), a living catalyst for healthy lives, and for positive changes that students can take home and into the community. Case Studies in Global School Health Promotion provides readers with a theoretical and research base needed to understand the methods used in communities all over the world to put this captivating concept in place. Case examples from over two dozen countries (representing urban and rural areas in developing and developed nations) outline the strategies taken to implement HPS programs in individual schools, municipalities, and nations. For each program, case study authors explain the problems they tackled, their motivation and supports to respond creatively; and the barriers they faced. In the cases, authors describe the capacities and infrastructure they created and mechanisms for cooperation; as well as the personnel, financial, and time requirements involved. School Health Promotion: Case Studies from India offers evidence-based insights and recommendations to those engaged in addressing the social determinants of health at the school level. The book provides an overview of school health promotion and adolescent health in India, and presents case studies of four programmes: SHAPE, UDAAN, Drishti and Prayatna. Together, these programmes cover seven states of India, and are characterised by different types of human resource delivery, levels of engagement with the school and students, and systems for monitoring and supervision. The case studies provide valuable lessons for strengthening existing programmes and developing new approaches.The target audience includes education and health policy-makers, administrators, researchers and practitioners in government, academic institutions, funding agencies, non-governmental organisations and civil society.

No education system is effective unless it promotes the health and well-being of its students, staff and community. These strong links have never been more visible and compelling than in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. A health-promoting school (HPS) approach was introduced over 25 years ago and has been promoted globally since; however, the aspiration of a fully embedded, sustainable HPS system has not yet been achieved, and very few countries have implemented and sustained the approach at scale. How can we make every school a health-promoting school, and how can we implement, sustain and scale up the approach at country level, particularly in low- and middle-income countries? All stakeholders involved in identifying, planning, funding, implementing, monitoring and evaluating the HPS approach will find some answers in this publication, which summarizes the experiences of eight countries spread across the world.

Schools are unique places. They pay a central role in the formation of young people. The importance of how young people are educated and how they are encouraged to live and learn cannot be underestimated. This book advocates for the fostering of agency not only amongst school personnel but also amongst younger generations for health and sustainability. It provides the reader with a new lens with which to discover health promoting schools and education for sustainable development. It invites the reader to look more deeply into both and to accompany the authors on a journey of discovery of the real potential for each to enhance the practice of schooling.

This document seeks to contribute elements in response to the questions: How do we-in the countries of Latin America-build a Health Promoting School? and, What are the determining factors in a successful implementation process? To this end, we will examine the principal aspects involved in the implementation process, based on international experience, with special emphasis on what is distinctive in the regional context.

SDG3 - Good Health and Wellbeing: Re-Calibrating the SDG Agenda will explore topics surrounding the contemporary discussions concerning the implementation of the goal. It will cover concepts and concerns, and include practical case studies of how SDG3 has been implemented in different regions of the world.
