Debating James White Shocking Failures Of The Undefeatable Anti Catholic Champion

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

The anti-Catholic is one who thinks that Catholicism is not a Christian system of theology and that to be a good Christian and get saved, one must be a bad Catholic; that is, reject several tenets of Catholicism. James White (Reformed Baptist) is the leading and most influential anti-Catholic today. He specializes in debates, preferring moderated oral debates. I prefer written debate. This book features twelve back-and-forth debates with James White and also critiques or refutations of his writings. For those who agree with me that written, back-and-forth, substantive exchanges are worthy of the name "debate," this book will be a (hopefully helpful) close examination of the flawed theology of James White and his critiques of Catholicism. I'm happy, as always, to present both sides and let the reader judge. This is the beauty of dialogue. Readers may take in the arguments and data of both proponents in a dispute and exercise critical faculties in order to decide where the truth is to be found.

The Catholic Movement In The American Episcopal Church

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

A word about the origin of this book may be of some interest to its readers. In 1932, I was a layman of the Church, with a long-standing interest in Church history. As the centenary of the Oxford Movement approached, I noted that while the history of the movement in England had been told and retold, there was no corresponding account of the American developments of Tractarianism. With more courage than discretion, I set out to supply this want . . . . By 1941, I was ready for publication. But to find a publisher for a work of this sort, with its tenuous prospects of sale, was not easy. Eventually, the Church Historical Society ventured. The result was a pleasant suprise for both author and publisher. The book . . . was well recieved and widely reviewed. Above all, it sold. And still more suprising, the sale has continued steadily, until the first edition is exhausted. Meanwhiloe, many things have happened. I have continued to explore the field, with considerable results . . . Because of all these developments, and because there still seems to be a demand for the work, author and publisher again make their bow to a long-suffering public. --From the Author's Preface to the Second Edition

Key Concepts In Romantic Literature

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Key Concepts in Romantic Literature is an accessible and easy-to-use scholarly guide to the literature, criticism and history of the culturally rich and politically turbulent Romantic era (1789-1832). The book offers a comprehensive and critically up-to-date account of the fascinating poetry, novels and drama which characterized the Romantic period alongside an historically-informed account of the important social, political and aesthetic contexts which shaped that body of writing. The epochal poetry of William Wordsworth, William Blake, Mary Robinson, S. T. Coleridge, Charlotte Smith, P. B. Shelley, Lord Byron, John Keats, Felicia Hemans and Letitia Elizabeth Landon; the drama of Joanna Baillie and Charles Robert Maturin; the novels of Jane Austen and Mary Shelley; all of these figures and many more are insightfully discussed here, together with clear and helpful accounts of the key contexts of the age's literature (including the French Revolution, slavery, industrialisation, empire and the rise of feminism) as well as accounts of perhaps less familiar aspects of late Georgian culture (such as visionary spirituality, atheism, gambling, fashion, music and sport). This is the broadest guide available to late eighteenth and early 19th century British and Irish literature, history and culture.
