BOOK EXCERPT:

This 2016 Article IV Consultation highlights that macroeconomic outcomes in Chad continue to underperform, owing to the major impact of two exogenous shocks: lower oil prices and higher regional insecurity. Oil revenues have collapsed to a fraction of their previous level and are expected to recover only partially and gradually. Economic activity slowed sharply in 2015, with GDP growth estimated to have decelerated to 1.8 percent from 6.9 percent in 2014. The short- and medium-term outlooks remain challenging. Including a contraction of 1.1 percent in 2016, GDP growth is projected to average about 2 percent a year during 2016–18, compared with almost 5 percent during 2013–15.

This 2012 Article IV Consultation focuses on Chad’s economic developments and policies. Economic performance in 2011–2012 has been marked by an oncoming stream of several large industrial projects. The IMF report highlights that growth slowed in 2011 and inflation accelerated at year’s end, while the balance of payments strengthened. The nonoil primary deficit declined in 2011, and the overall fiscal balance swung from a deficit to a small surplus leaving room for private-sector credit expansion. A new approach, developed in collaboration with international partners (including the Food and Agriculture Organisation and World Food Programme), focuses on improving water management, warehouse capacity, and information systems.

BOOK EXCERPT:

"This book is not just the story of an amazing young man's life journey....it's much more than that. This is a labour of love by a proud father. A touching tribute to his son's courage, his love of family, and his commitment to his God. It is a celebration of a life well lived." - Suzanne Faull, Chaplain, Expatriate Support Ministries "Around Newcastle are many homes built and renovated by my friend Chad. When he wasn't swinging a hammer for clients, he was hard at work building a life around him. This year Chad began building his family a new house. Chad was in hospital when they last raced at Bathurst. He was thin and in pain, but laughed as he talked about cars and fishing and his suffering and faith. He always clung to hope, to a miracle. Although he couldn't eat his meal, he was concerned I hadn't had dinner. His last words were "Jesus, wow." - Bruce Quirey, Senior Journalist, Newcastle Herald "The story of Chad is very moving and inspiring. Publishing it will not only give justice to the wonderful life he lived, but will also leave a legacy to those who know him and to those who will know him through his book. I just felt that this book can make a difference to the lives of other people when it's out in the market. What a birthday present would this be for Chad. I know he is very happy in the presence of the Lord knowing that he is cherished by his loving family for the wonderful life he lived. Truly enough he will be 33 years old forever which is a very significant number for the Saviour." - Michael Mendes, Senior Publishing Consultant, Xlibris.

BOOK EXCERPT:

Since its Independence in 1960 Chad has been torn apart by internal rebellion and civil war. A series of regimes have imposed various forms of arbitrary rule while large areas have been held under the changing fortunes of warlords, disaffected military commanders. opposition groups, guerrilla bands and foreign backed forces, including those of France and Libya. Is it possible for a poor landlocked country with many different ethnic groups to build a viable Nation-State? Chad’s diverse population is divided between the numerous African Sara peoples of the far south, the Arabic speakers of the centre and the minority tribes of the northern third of the country. The Sara are mainly Christians and animists while the others are Muslims. Ethnic and religious antagonisms have been — and continue to be — fuelled by resentment at economic exactions, widespread corruption and arbitrary rule. Conflict, whether in riots or civil war, has led to many thousands of people dying and hundreds of thousands fleeing into exile as refugees. Attempts by the OAU to bring about reconciliation have not been successful. Today with the regime of President Hissen Habré most of Chad is again under one government, this time dominated by a small minority group from the far north — but can Habré win the peace. Chad, Minority Rights Group report no 80, examines the roots and course of the conflict in this desperately poor African nation. Written by Kaye Whiteman. Editor-in Chief of West Africa and an experienced commentator on Africa, this report outlines Chad’s bloody history since Independence and its prospects for the future. Essential reading for all those interested in modern Africa and its future. Please note that the terminology in the fields of minority rights and indigenous peoples’ rights has changed over time. MRG strives to reflect these changes as well as respect the right to self-identification on the part of minorities and indigenous peoples. At the same time, after over 50 years’ work, we know that our archive is of considerable interest to activists and researchers. Therefore, we make available as much of our back catalogue as possible, while being aware that the language used may not reflect current thinking on these issues.

Modeling Inflation In Chad

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This paper examines the determinants of inflation in Chad using quarterly data from 1983:Q1 to 2009:Q3. The analysis is based on a single-equation model, completed by a structural vector auto regression model to capture inflation persistence. The results show that the main determinants of inflation in Chad are rainfall, foreign prices, exchange rate movements, and public spending. The effects of rainfall shocks and changes in foreign prices on inflation persist during six quarters. Changes in public spending and the nominal exchange rate affect inflation during three and four quarters, respectively.
