This book presents case studies of educational innovation in a number of Mediterranean countries. Each chapter provides the reader with a background detailing key national socio-cultural, economic, and political dynamics that drive educational development in the region. As they attempt to meet the challenge of participating in the global economy, several countries in the south of Europe and the Middle East and North African region look toward formal education to bring about change - be this through curricular reform, the introduction of information technology, or the engagement of new and more effective forms of instruction. This collection provides important insights into the process of innovation and the role that education plays in modernization.

This issue of Unasylva will be dedicated to the restoration of degraded forest ecosystems in the Mediterranean region. Ten years after the last issue on Mediterranean forests, this volume will provide a status of Mediterranean forest resources with a specific focus on restoration efforts, recent developments, and opportunities to achieve regional and global pledges. It will also highlight Mediterranean restoration efforts that the UN Decade wants to promote on a global scale.

The tension between the aim of creating sustainable multilateral region-building dynamics and the need to find more differentiated and flexible forms of cooperation has been ever-present in Euro-Mediterranean relations. The proliferation of different and partially overlapping initiatives in recent years – the Euro-Mediterranean Partnership, the European Neighbourhood Policy and the Union for the Mediterranean – is a plain expression of this tension. The 2011 episodes of regime-change in the Arab world have once again placed the debate about differentiation in EU’s relations with Southern and Eastern Mediterranean Countries at the top of the Union’s foreign policy agenda. This book contributes to theoretical and practical debates on whether differentiation processes can aid or hinder policy convergence processes and region-building efforts more widely. Contributions to this book question the concept of the clash of cultures. The challenge to the West does not lie in the monolith of Islam turning aggressively outward to Europe and the US, but in the rivalries between regimes ruling over societies divided by an imbalance in wealth and power.

This volume presents essential aspects of Mediterranean politics to be reconsidered in the light of the Arab upheavals since 2010. The focal point of the book is the question in how far European-Mediterranean relations are challenged by the various developments. It explores the relationship between security and democracy within the Arab countries and in European-Mediterranean relations. This publication examines the importance of trade in services for the integration of non-EU members into the European Single Market. Further liberalisation is found to be a critical factor to deeper integration with the enlarged EU, which accounts for a quarter of global GDP and foreign direct investment. The planned Euro-Mediterranean free trade area for goods is judged as a positive first step, but additional measures are needed for deeper integration, including liberalisation of services trade. The study gives a detailed assessment of individual sectors, including core services relating to transport, telecommunication, financial markets and electricity, as well other markets such as tourism, IT and distribution services.
