Published records of benthic marine red algae (Rhodophyta) from tropical and subtropical Australia are systematically listed with full bibliographic details and collection localities. More than four hundred taxa are included and, for each, references to the original description and, where possible, references to an illustration are also given.

The Algae of Australia series will provide the basic systematic data necessary for issues relating to conservation, biological diversity and the management of aquatic ecosystems. For the purposes of this series 'Algae' is interpreted in a very broad sense, to cover all organisms that have traditionally been studied by phycologists, including macroalgae, unicellular and multicellular microalgae and cyanobacteria. Individual titles will range from the more traditional taxon-based accounts to regional or habitat-based treatments.

Part II covers seaweed ecophysiology, including the relationships of light, temperature, salinity, and other abiotic factors on seaweed distribution, as well as biotic factors such as competition, herbivory, predation, and parasitism, in order to elucidate the ecophysiologic bases for the distribution patterns examined in Part I.
