Chemometrics Based Spectroscopy For Pharmaceutical And Biomedical Analysis

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Chemometrics is the application of mathematics and statistics to chemical data in order to design or select optimal experimental procedures, to provide maximum relevant information, and to obtain knowledge about systems under study. This chemical discipline has constantly developed to become a mature field of Analytical Chemistry after its inception in the 1970s. The utility and versatility of chemometric techniques enable spectroscopists to perform multidimensional classification and/or calibration of spectral data that make identification and quantification of analytes in complex mixtures possible.Wavelets are mathematical functions that cut up data into different frequency components, and then study each component with a resolution matched to its scale. They are now being adapted for a vast number of signal processing due to their unprecedented success in terms of asymptotic optimality, spatial adaptivity and computational efficiency. In analytical chemistry, they have increasingly shown great applicability and have been preferred over existing signal processing algorithms in noise removal, resolution enhancement, data compression and chemometrics modeling in chemical studies. The aim of this Research Topic is to present state-of-the-art applications of chemometrics, in the field of spectroscopy, with special attention to the use of wavelet transform. Both reviews and original research articles on pharmaceutical and biomedical analysis are welcome in the specialty section Analytical Chemistry.

Chemometrics

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Chemometrics: Data Treatment and Applications demonstrates the best practices for treating real-world analytical instrument data and how to apply chemometrics to this data. Rather than focusing on the mathematical theory involved in chemometrics, this book is meant for the industrial chemist, and academics and advanced students that want to use chemometrics in practice. Case studies on several applications are presented. Unlike existing literature, this book focuses on best practices, practical realities, and challenges when treating data, rather than on the mathematical theory. It also provides basic information on chemometrics, several chapters on how to treat, and the best practices used to treat, data from different analytical instruments, as well as case studies and uses of chemometrics in different fields. The book is written primarily for analytic chemists as practitioners in analytical laboratories and other industries. It will also be useful to academics and graduate, masters and postdoc students chiefly working in analytical chemistry who want to improve the practical aspects of their research activities. - Presents topical and important chapters for the most-used analytical instruments - Focuses on practical issues in the implementation of chemometrics - Examines advances in the application of chemometrics in several fields - Includes frank perspectives on what works well for the data of a certain analytical instrument given the multiple choices of mathematical models and protocols that can be applied - Covered protocols are heavily illustrated with case studies showing their potential use and the advances in chemometrics

Quantitative And Qualitative Determination Technologies Of Counterfeit Drugs

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Drugs are often counterfeited to reduce manufacture costs, while still marketing it at as an authentic product. Increased incidence of drug counterfeiting is most noticeable in developing countries, which may not have the resources to supply counterfeit detection devices on a large scale. It is important to consider the problems caused and to propose options for controlling and reducing the prevalence of counterfeit medications. Various technologies are needed to identify the chemical properties of a questioned medicinal product, which can then be used to determine its authenticity. This volume focuses on current technological approaches that are able to detect counterfeited pharmaceuticals. Features Focuses on current technological approaches that are able to detect counterfeited pharmaceuticals Assesses the chemical methods of identifying counterfeit medicinal products and explains the theoretical underpinnings of the methods Provides case study type examples of the application for analysis of suspected counterfeit pharmaceuticals Discusses the detection and analysis of counterfeit drugs, and appropriate tools for combating this issue The editor draws on his experience as a respected chemist and prolific author in the field to provide this unique text on drug counterfeiting detection

Spectroscopic Methods In Food Analysis

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Given the inherent complexity of food products, most instrumental techniques employed for quality and authenticity evaluation (e.g., chromatographic methods) are time demanding, expensive, and involve a considerable amount of manual labor. Therefore, there has been an increasing interest in simpler, faster, and reliable analytical methods for assessing food quality attributes. Spectroscopic Methods in Food Analysis presents the basic concepts of spectroscopic methods, together with a discussion on the most important applications in food analysis. The determination of product quality and authenticity and the detection of adulteration are major issues in the food industry, causing concern among consumers and special attention among food manufacturers. As such, this book explains why spectroscopic methods have been extensively employed to the analysis of food products as they often require minimal or no sample preparation, provide rapid and on-line analysis, and have the potential to run multiple tests on a single sample (i.e., non-destructive). This book consists of concepts related to food quality and authenticity, that are quite broad, given the different demands of the manufacturer, the consumer, the surveillance and the legislative bodies that ultimately provide healthy and safe products.
